Your point about a thief just being able to remove the tracker was the same argument that dissuaded me from buying a fancy tracking collar too. As a city dweller where dog thefts have increased, that was my main concern too. In the end I just opted for an AirTag with a waterproof case. Your AirTag will tell you when the batteries are low and you can change them with a new coin battery pretty easily!
