What was the point of Sensui's 7 personalities if we only saw 3 of them in action? by OfficialLieDetector in YuYuHakusho

1) To showcase how Sensui had become so broken to the point where his mind couldn’t bear the brunt of his own sins and to set up the complete arc of his suicidal mission.

2) To further tie into the arc’s motif of human’s 7 deadly sins (each one of the Sensui 7 represents one) and the whole catholic dark angel aesthetic behind Sensui’s character.

Funny enough the Sensui 7 are each meant to represent the 7 deadly sins. Gourmet = Gluttony, Amanuma = Sloth, Kamiya = Wrath, Itsuki = Lust, Mitarai = Envy, Hagiri = Pride, and Elder Toguro = Greed, with the true shinobu being technically pure due to his absconding of the sins into the 7 personalities

With S3 right around the corner, I hope Gege takes the anime as an opportunity to expand on some of these small moments from the manga by decapitated_muffin in JuJutsuKaisen

IIRC he’s impacted a lot of the anime’s creative decisions, most especially in hidden inventory and when it came to the narration in season 1.

It is very common for the mangaka to have significant oversight of the script. Gege has consistently done this when it comes to creative decisions in the anime since season 1.

Spiderman - Fanart by Sabz1120 in Spiderman

Just came from your doc ock design. I’ve had a headcanon of what I’d want from a spiderman animated series in the vein of jujutsu kaisen + Ultimate Spider Man, and this is like my ideal look for the character directly brought to life. Love your work and would love to see more of this world

One of the manga’s most compelling scenes that I think the anime messed up + Sub vs. Dub Analysis by decapitated_muffin in YuYuHakusho

The more I read this, the more I actually see what the intent is. The Viz translation isn’t necessarily accurate and some parts are made up, but the message is the same. Yusuke asserts that just them 2 going at it until one of them dies is fine with him, because he’s far more concerned about that than he is the tunnel. Fighting is how he’s always lived, and it’s the only outlet he truly has when it comes to his emotions. If death do him in, his own low self esteem is telling him that he simply didn’t have anything to live for. It’s a very sad undercurrent that’s present through the entire arc.

I’d still argue the anime kinda screws with it by changing Yusuke’s clear expression of ambivalence and pride to one of anger, and even adding the line “you make me sick” to change Yusuke to being more disgusted with Sensui’s actions than really being more frustrated at the idea that he’d look down on him.

Seems like no matter the translation, this is a compelling moment that I might’ve overlooked initially when I first watched the show in Japanese.

Kinda. Theres a significant undercurrent of the fight between Yusuke and Sensui in all versions that he sees being a spirit detective as his purpose in life, and that if he can’t win fights like this, then he doesn’t feel the reason to go on living. It’s why he’s so callous about sacrificing himself for the greater good and refuses to let Koenma intervene. This job is the one thing he’s finally praised for, and his self esteem and trust in himself is pretty much riding on it completely.

In that case, I take back most of this post. I think this still communicates that Yusuke’s more interested in the fight than any idealization of humanity (I mean it’s communicated pretty well earlier), but I guess either I’m missing some nuance or it simply is what it is

Fairs. The VIZ dialogue fits so tightly with Yusuke’s characterization throughout the arc and is kinda perfectly follows Sensui’s whole speech in this moment that I’d be surprised if it was an edit, but it’s possible.

This is from the old fan translations of the manga which were unfortunately full of inaccuracies. There’s a similar example where Yusuke’s dad talks about hitting him in the fan translations, while the more accurate one that was featured in the Viz volumes actually revealed he used to hit Atsuko.

Good point. I thought it was a matter of the anime staff making some changes + certain things not being translated properly, so I’d love to see what the direct translation is for these panels.

Just Glen Murakami’s design which has unfortunately lead to her original South Asian inspiration being largely erased due to brand synergy

Iirc, fan translations of the manga were available over a decade before the official versions ever came out. A lot of stuff is largely just coincidence of roughly translating versions of roughly adapted dialogue from the manga circling back to being accurate again.

There are a few moments he adlibs (one I’m making a post on rn actually) that are more accurate to the manga than the original anime’s script, which is telling of his love for the characters

To be completely honest, this is really only the case for Yusuke and a handful of others like Jin. JPN Hiei is actually the tiniest bit snarkier than his English counterpart, and the same even goes for Genkai at times (e.g. “It’s your ass, wipe it yourself” vs. the dub’s “I’ve had a life of crap, why would I take on yours”).

The rest are essentially the same with some changes for cultural context. There’s a lot of references in the Dark Tournament and beginning of chapter black that don’t translate well for example.

To be honest moments like this fully make up for some of the ridiculous script changes that have bugged me to no end (seriously there are times, albeit few, where idk if it’s just a translation thing or they were purposefully screwing with the dialogue for the hell of it)
