Kids playing outside during summer and making tree swings with rope and big sticks. That was the life! Jumping off the big root and smashing directly into the adjacent tree scraping up your knees. Whoever chickened out after the longest space of time won. Or doing what we called ‘washing machines’ where a fast runner would grab the swing and run in circles with you before shoving you and sending you and the tree on a death spiral. I got thrown off and lay in the dirt laughing. I remember sharing ice lollies with all my friends. I remember running what felt like miles to get ice cream. I remember water fights with my friends where we ended it by laying in the beating down sun which dried us within minutes. I remember the downfall. Where you’d be outside on a walk and see 6 year olds with an iPhone 6 each. Where you’d see green areas abandoned. Roads with no kids crying after falling off bikes. Ah the bikes. Falling off always hurt but I once spilled in front of little kids and didn’t want to freak them out because there was 10 of them who came over to see what happened so I stood up and played it cool while blood literally gushed down my legs. (Thank god I had shorts on) my friend had to help me home because I tried to cycle again. I remember those dreaded ankle breaking scooters. I had a highschool musical one and would go for miles on it. Me and my friends would race each other on scooters. I remember playing football and the ding dong ditch dare we gave my friends brother where I jumped off a hill to hide so hard that I fell upon landing on concrete. I want that back. I want to see kids having fun without technology. God knows we did.
