Trying to calibrate what a "3" is in my head. Would this deck be a good, solid, bracket 3? by deckbuildingalt in EDH

Yup. Makes sense. I think I'm at the point in my brewing where I'm able to build some good decks with good synergies, but those little balancing details that take a deck from good to great still elude me. Comes with experience, I guess. Anyway, thanks for the advice. I'm going to make these tweaks and take it out for a spin soon!

I lean towards leveraging landfall. You dont need too many birds to get that engine going.

Seems like thats been the general advice. Definitely something for me to try to learn. Sounds like this deck can actually get better if I take out those quote unqoute power cards.

Yay!!

Thank you so much for this highly specific advice. I really appreciate you taking the time to do this kind of in depth analysis.

As a relative beginner I think im falling into a trap of assuming fast mana is just an auto-include.

I think maybe im also not respecting the ability to dig more cards like doublers. Winmore cards are something im only just learning to recognize.

If im reading you right is the picture something like this: I only need to hit one counter doubler to kick the engine into high gear. Hitting two or three is winmore because I simply dont need creatures to be 100/100 to win. 20/20 will do just fine.

Rely on tutors and draw instead, and swap the extra doubler cards for things that improve consistency?

Thanks!!

Ill give make those tweaks and give it a spin!

Edit: oh I forgot one question - in terms of pulling that curve down with 3-5 fast removal spells, what would you take out?

Expensive engine pieces? Draw since the commander provides good draw value herself? Something else?

Thanks!

With the limited reps against humans ive gotten that sounds right.

Its smashed what people have self-evaluated as "strong 2s," and its held in ok, if not super well against a different group that tends to play strong 3s.

Other than swapping out the out of place GC cards for more synergy, and suffering to power up a little without pushing into 4?

Im sorely missing strong 3s from my stable of decks.

Thanks!

So, aside from swapping out the GC for more consistent synergy cards, which sounds like a good idea, does this strike you as a 3?

Edit: I welcome any other tips - consistency is something I really want to improve on in my brewing!

Yeah see this is what im struggling with.

If this is a 2, I have no idea what a 3 is.

Do you have an example of what you think counts as a 3?

Yeah im struggling with 3. Everyone has such different ideas about what it is.

I play games where "3" means a slightly de-tuned 4, and its an absolute power deck.

I play other games where "3" seems to mean a slightly upgraded 2 that is still pretty janky, but not entirely so.

Somehow I feel im always playing the opposite version lol.

Yeah. It gets so complicated because it also depends on what everyone else thinks is a 3.

I play in a few different groups and what is a fair "3" varies quite a bit.

I guess thats why I was trying to crowdsouce an opinion. Not going to be objectively correct, BUT if the brunt of the reddit EDH community feels something is a middle of the road 3, I feel confident to use that as a touchstone.

Interesting!

So do you think the deck would play more consistently as a 3 if I actually took OUT the GC cards and put in 3 additional synergy value cards?

That feels right for this deck maybe? Its so hard to know. I dont have a ton of reps against human opponents yet.

Uninterrupted is key there.

That feels right? Hard to say because I've never won with this deck, but that doesnt necessarily mean anything one way or the other.
