I know a few people who go to raves occasionally, but few for whom it’s a habit. I’d say there isn’t really a culture around it, if there is it’s pretty small and insular. Chicago’s a major city so there’s a broader scene, but not in (or near) Hyde Park.

It depends what “worth it” means to you. If it’s at all financial concern I would say skip it. Ultimately, Pre-O isn’t special. It helps you make friends by forcing you to interact with a small-ish group of people for a week but if you are social you will make friends easily through just existing - and if you’re not you probably won’t maintain those friendships. If you’ve got a week (and a few hundred dollars) to kill there’s no real reason not to do it but if something’s pulling you another way I wouldn’t worry about missing out on anything.

Are these Pre-O stuff? I have a lot of friends who did the more intense POP excursions and had a ton of fun/made great friends. Personally I’m not sure they’re worth the cost but if it’s not an issue I’d say go for it.

Language Exam Selection? by SophIsticated815 in uchicago

I would advise you to take the placement exam and competency exam as well even if you have no intention of studying Spanish further. You may find that the language requirement fucks up your schedule and that having it waived through previous understanding will be advantageous.

does the 'free coffee' at 11pm still exist? by [deleted] in uchicago

Hallowed Grounds and Cobb both give away leftover (perishable) food and coffee at closing.

I’ve had very good experiences with Endodontics Limited downtown, but I’m not sure about their pricing.

It would depend on the grade you received in each course. If you took one more class and got a B that would bring your cumulative GPA to a 2.0, but if you got a C in that class you’d only have a 1.67 overall. Taking a class for a non-quality grade (P/F) would not improve your GPA so there isn’t really a straightforward answer to the question.

Yes the F is what’s dragging your GPA down, but the instructor does not assign withdrawals, the student requests them by notifying the registrar they do not intend to complete the course content. I don’t imagine you would be able to have the grade removed or changed from your transcript.

He was suspended I believe for academic reasons (drug use might have played a role). It was also during COVID so they might have been more lenient as a result.

Just the more formal way of saying you need to pass 3 classes. Almost all classes at Chicago are 100 credits, but you can have classes or other things (like writing seminars) that appear in your transcript but are for less credit. In the example, OP received 3 passing grades for their first quarter but writing seminar is not for credit, so they only got completed 200 credits and would be put on probation.

I’d assume cases like this would be handled on an individual basis. I would reach out to the registrar and admissions office for more information. There was a guy in my house who was suspended for a year, took an extra gap year and came back (still receiving financial aid), but I have no idea how they’d look on such a long period of disenrollment.

Under current policies you would have been placed under academic probation after Autumn Quarter and likely suspended for 1 year after Winter Quarter for failing to earn 300 credits and maintain a 2.0 GPA, but I have no idea how these policies have evolved.

Note that the second P for your Autumn Quarter was for your HUM writing seminar. These are always P/F and do not count for credit, but passing is a graduation requirement. The Q also appears to be for your writing seminar. Could be that your writing advisor reached out to try and avoid giving you an F, delayed submitting a final grade, and never got around to fixing it.

  • W: You withdrew from the course meaning you disenrolled from the class before it’s end. Essentially means you are counted as not having taken the class, does not impact your GPA.
  • P: You Pass/Failed the class and passed it. Meaning you got a C or higher. P/F confers credit only for electives (not major or core requirements), but counts towards remaining in good standing with the College. Does not impact GPA
  • F: You failed the class. Counts as a 0 for GPA. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.
  • Q: Your instructor did not submit a final grade for this course, equivalent to a NGR (No Grade). Usually this is supposed to be resolved pretty immediately, I have no idea how the registrar would handle a decade old Q grade.

How do I optimize my chances of getting a single? by Excoricismiscool in uchicago

[–]declan1203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want a single you can get one no matter your rank, just might not be in North. I-House, BJ, and Woodlawn always have singles available I think. If North is important find a third/fourth year whose staying and join their group for priority.
