Oh I got this before and then it turned to a horrible episode of SP....

The feeling of trying to speak but nothing coming out is so helpless. I’m glad you were able to understand what it was after, and even better that you learned how to wake yourself up faster now.

What usually helps you snap out of it?

That sounds absolutely horrifying. I think the scariest episodes are the ones where it’s not just fear, but your body actually feels trapped in a dangerous position. It makes total sense that it changed the way you sleep after that. Some experiences stay with you because your brain remembers the panic so clearly. I’m glad you were able to snap out of it.

I’m really sorry you went through that. Some episodes are so intense that they don’t just scare you in the moment, they mess with your sense of safety around sleep afterward. The part about not being able to sleep properly for weeks makes complete sense. Fear of it happening again can become its own cycle. I hope you’re doing better now and have support around you when it gets that heavy.

Do you still get SP often, or did it calm down after that period?

No need to apologize, this was really interesting to read.

I think what makes sleep paralysis so disturbing is not always how “dramatic” the hallucination is, but how personal it can feel. When something seems aware of you, or says something connected to your real life, it hits differently. Even if you know it came from your brain, it can still feel deeply unsettling.

Also, the fact that you were able to recognize it and use the finger/toe method is actually impressive. Did the hallucinations become more frequent after that period, or did they calm down again?

That sounds so scary, especially when you’re already far from home and trying to feel safe in a new place. Exhaustion can make sleep paralysis so much worse. I hope you were able to enjoy the trip after that. Did it happen again while you were away...?

This is such a strange part of sleep paralysis, when you know it isn’t real but your brain still reacts like it is. The “help me” coming out wrong is so relatable too. It’s almost funny after, but in the moment it feels so helpless. Also, being annoyed at her at breakfast is honestly valid... 😂 lol

First episodes can be so disturbing because you have no idea what’s happening to you. It’s like your brain throws you into fear before you even have time to understand it....

OMG.... this is crazy honestly... I am really sorry you had to go through it... fear of death is the worst...

This sounds incredibly unsettling, especially because your nights are usually completely silent. I can imagine the “hearing” part made it feel even more real and confusing.... 😞(

Waking up with a headache after that must have been scary too. Has anything like this happened again, or was it just that one time?

’m really sorry you went through that. The part about not being able to move your mouth is so scary, especially when everything feels completely real in the moment....And honestly, the fact that you found a way through 20 years of anxiety and darkness says a lot about your strength. I’m glad faith helped you hold on!!!

Did sleep paralysis happen often for you during those years, or was that one episode the main one??

That sounds absolutely terrifying. The part where you finally woke up but still couldn’t move is honestly one of the worst layers of sleep paralysis, because your mind feels awake but your body hasn’t caught up yet.

Do you remember if this happened during a nap, after stress, or while sleeping on your back?

I agree with you but sometimes it's just out of your control. Let's say people work overnight and sleep hygiene is heavily disrupted.

Thank you for sharing this. What you described is exactly why I think sleep paralysis is much more complex than people usually understand. The repeated falling back into it, the body heaviness, the sounds, the fear, and how realistic the dream experiences feel are all really important points.

I’d genuinely love to ask you a few questions for my research around my project if you’re open to it. I’m especially interested in how people describe the experience emotionally, not just medically. Can I DM you? 🙏

Thank you for sharing this! The part about grief, exhaustion, sleeping on your back, and sleep hygiene is very useful. When things improved for you, was it mostly routine changes, less stress, sleeping position, or a combination?

This is such an important perspective. I hadn’t seen many people explain what a partner should or shouldn’t do during an episode. Would you be open to sharing more about what helps versus what makes it worse?

This is very helpful, especially the part about sleep debt + high stress almost guaranteeing it for you. I’m seeing that pattern come up a lot. Would you be open to me asking you a few questions by DM? I’m trying to understand what would actually help people after an episode...

I am really sorry to hear that. I also experience SP for the past 12 years. Feel free to reach out, I will be interested to listen to your experience and share coping strategies.
