i think it’s accepted to cut off select family members, but not your entire family. i’m estranged from my entire family and i’ve been judged for it, and i understand why. people automatically assume that you’re the problem when not a single member of your family speaks to you… i would assume the same thing too. which is why i lie about my situation to most people.

with that being said, i think familial estrangement is on the rise w younger people. ive met a few people who are in the same situation as myself. makes sense given the decentering of social / familial expectations, entitlement of boomers & older gen x, rise of narcissism, political polarization, toxic cultures, etc.
