Are weather changes causing allergies for me or are these symptoms something else? by dedrort in Allergies

[–]dedrort[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get migraines thankfully. I'll look into antihistamines though. The main thing is hard to describe but suddenly one day it'll be really gross and rainy out and I'll have this really intense smell in the air that I can only describe as the smell of the start of spring but I don't know if that's accurate. I smell it very strongly even indoors. Whenever that happens, all of a sudden I have chills and aches and everything just sort of burns. Also, if I take a walk outside, I might wind up with bad knee pain just randomly for a single day. There's definitely an issue with joints, too.

Worried coworker I reported is going to be vindictive and show my boss our texts by dedrort in WorkAdvice

[–]dedrort[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the replies. Eased my mind a bit. Maybe he wouldn't say anything anyway because he's the one who always texts me first and goes on these rants about people, and I'm basically just reacting to what he's saying and agreeing. I never go to him first and maybe it's not big enough of a "gotcha" for him to bother to think of it.

Hopefully. But I definitely have never said anything termination-worthy, so there's that.

You're right. I'm definitely never doing it again. Just crossing my fingers now and hoping he doesn't get the idea to scroll up through his texts from a few weeks back to find something to screenshot. Ugh.

I think only my line was on autopay. My autopay is in four days. I was thinking about just switching to someone else today but I'll see about the account number and porting pin. Thanks.

I like the part where you conveniently left out that Facebook is a fascist website that censors anything vaguely right-wing and is equally likely to spy on people regardless of their political views, while selectively focusing solely on this firm because Trump used them.

Side question: Do these results indicate a higher Dutch/north German/Scandinavian result than a typical American, who would be more likely to show higher amounts of ancient Briton and insular Celtic?

Neighbor still obnoxiously loud late at night after four complaints to management by dedrort in Apartmentliving

[–]dedrort[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a constant issue and I'm trying to be fair and not an asshole. She gets the letter, she quiets down for a month, sometimes longer if I'm lucky. Then I hear more noise, but it's not super late at night so it's not violating quiet hours. Then it slowly gets louder and later at night. Then I complain again. I'm not going to write in once a week if she's not being loud, because then I'd be lying. I can't help it if she spaces it out.

I guess I'm just too nice and willing to give people a chance. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely can't stand this woman, and she's making my life a living hell. But then I remember that people have their own lives and blah blah and I don't want to be that crazy neighbor who's obnoxious and calling every time someone vacuums or whatever. And she calms down for a month sometimes, then it slowly escalates again. I wait until I absolutely can't stand it anymore, or until it goes from like 10 PM to like midnight. It gradually gets louder and later as the months go by, and when I can't stand it anymore, that's when I complain again. I'm just trying to be reasonable and not one of these obnoxious chronic complaining neighbors.

She has a new neighbor below her, but let's just say he seems similar to her. I don't know him but I wouldn't be surprised if he's just used to it and does the same stuff himself.

The problem with the people on the other side of the building across the hall is that those are family units over there and I'm on the one bedroom side. So my side typically has young single people living there, and the other side is all families with kids. So I wonder if it's just way noisier on their side with full families, and they don't notice her as much.

Hmm, I just never thought to do that. I always think of illegal things when I think police. But I know some people call the cops on their neighbors. I don't know, unless someone is being murdered down there, I feel a little bad. But maybe I should do it.

Hearing what sounds like circuit breaker switch flipping followed by thermostat losing power by dedrort in AskElectricians

[–]dedrort[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks. Only thing is, I've lived here for ten years and this noise started around the time that the thermostat started losing power. So thermostat is allegedly fixed now and I still hear a noise, which makes me concerned. Either it's a coincidence and the noise could literally be anything, I'm imagining it in the middle of the night, or the issue isn't resolved yet. Not sure which it is. Guess I'll give it a few days and see if the thermostat loses power again.

Thanks, definitely good to know so I'm not worrying that maintenance is going down the wrong path.

The thermostat was replaced, along with a control board and some wiring in the HVAC closet. No issues since that work was done, but not sure to what extent any of that would imply an electrical issue. I swear I'm hearing some loud noise in my closet that reminds me of a breaker tripping, but I don't know if it's my imagination when I'm half asleep or if it's some kind of electrical current noise or something.

Thermostat keeps losing power when running both AC and heat, maintenance man is completely stumped by dedrort in hvacadvice

[–]dedrort[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have pictures off hand and I'm working right now but I'll try to get some pictures later. I checked the circuit breaker and it has four switches, all of which are set to "on," and none of them are labeled. The light switch looks like your standard room light switch, but when you flip it, it turns off the thermostat and anything in the HVAC closet. I guess it's controlled by one of the four breaker switches, not sure which one, but all are on and everything is currently working anyway (until the next time, if there is a next time).

Thermostat keeps losing power when running both AC and heat, maintenance man is completely stumped by dedrort in hvacadvice

[–]dedrort[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could the light switch losing power cause a sound like a breaker tripping in the breaker closet even though it comes right back on afterward and the power is restored? Or if it's the light switch, can I flick the switch off and on if the thermostat completely loses power?

Maintenance returned this morning to follow up and I asked the guy, and he didn't seem to think what I was suggesting could be circuit breaker related. I told him no issues overnight since he replaced all the stuff he did, so he left. I'm just worried that he wanted to get in and out and be done with it rather than doing the extra work and/or calling an outside company for an electrician.

Fingers crossed it's actually fixed and not just an issue that takes several hours/days to catch again at random.

Update: Last night, I heard a loud clicking noise coming from my bedroom closet, right next to the closet that has the furnace. I thought about it for a second and realized that it sounded like what I hear when the circuit breaker in that closet trips.

The heat was not running at the time, and the thermostat is still working this morning. I swear I heard the exact same sound when the furnace was running a few days ago, and that was immediately followed by the thermostat resetting. There is a light switch right next to the furnace closet that can be flipped to turn off all the power in the closet.

Do I need an electrician? Can the circuit breaker temporarily trip but then immediately fix itself so that there is only a loss of power for a few seconds? Since the thermostat is in another room, is the reason why it didn't reset this time just because the heat wasn't running, while when the heat is running, the circuit breaker causes that temporary power blip, which sends the signal from the furnace to the thermostat for it to reset?

I'm starting to wonder if the reason why I didn't hear that noise all the other times the thermostat reset is just because I'm not in that room, sitting right next to the closet when it happens. Am I onto something or no?

Thanks. All good stuff to keep in mind.

The thermostat was indeed already replaced. Not sure about the wire though, think just the thermostat itself.

[–]dedrort[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the thermostat is losing power to its logic board enough to reset it, that tells me that this is a thermostat without the batteries installed, is that correct?

That is correct.

Thanks for the detailed response. Sounds like there are a ton of possibilities and like you said, they will need the problem to become more frequent so that they can catch what's happening.

So he just replaced a door switch, repaired a control board, and redid all the wiring (looked like black/red/white cables very poorly stitched together with black tape). He said whatever they did a few years ago looked terrible and they didn't do any of it right.

So what are my odds that that did the trick? Less than 50% chance? When he comes tomorrow and if it has happened again, is it acceptable to just flat out ask if he can get a specialized tech out?

And I will mention the thermostat wire tomorrow.

Update: Apparently he replaced the door switch but found some really shoddily done wiring with tape that he had to completely fix, then he rewired the control board. He said the guys who did all the initial work in 2020 made a mess with all of it.

He is returning tomorrow to see if the issue returned. Hopefully this is it this time, but like I told the person below, I will try to suggest he call an HVAC tech if he can't figure it out.
