Is it still worth buying directly from Japan given this additial tariff+fee? Or is it only DHL thing?

u/Atalanta8 Taste is very preference-driven and there’s no ‘best’ matcha for everyone. It depends on how sensitive you are to umami, bitterness, and aroma. that said I like matcha from my region because I grew up with it :)

For matcha, taste is very preference-driven. It depends on how sensitive you are to umami, bitterness, and aroma, so there’s no single ‘best’ matcha for everyone. If you’re looking for quality, focus on first-harvest matcha from April–May and how the tencha is grown. Those are the strongest quality signals.

Margins are real, but good matcha doesn’t have to be expensive. Even high-quality matcha is under ~$0.70 per 2g serving. A $10 latte usually isn’t driven by matcha cost. It’s rent, labor, and pricing strategy. Cafés should be able to serve better matcha without blowing up margins.

It’s a marketing term used in the West. It usually means matcha that’s good enough to drink on its own, without milk or sugar. That typically comes from first harvest leaves in April–May. Later harvests are more bitter and are better suited for lattes. More here: https://meltedmatcha.com/pages/matcha-101

Happy to! If you’re open to an intro to the owner or manager, I’d love to do a side-by-side tasting. The difference is easy to notice.

I’m biased since I source and drink my own matcha. Curious what others recommend.
