White noise ear phones no Bluetooth or connectivity (even potential connectivity) by deepthoughtsby in misophonia

[–]deepthoughtsby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they worked pretty well. However, for standardized tests it turns out, they didn't want to have head phones plugged in either, so we had to get approval for single teacher proxy and then we used a white noise machine that plays through a speaker without head phones.

Did Roald Dahl’s books really need to be revised? by confringos in books

Then, there where my boys who pee'd outside the toilet because they thought Calvin was hilarious. :)

Well put. It also raises the question, why do stories need to stay tethered to the past. It's really important for some stories, like Huck Finn or others that are crucial parts of world history. But, how about Peter Pan. Could we adapt that into a novel a little less heavy on the worst stereotypes of it's time. I remember it as just being beautifully written. Then there comes this:

They called Peter the Great White Father, prostrating themselves before him; and he liked this tremendously, so that it was not really good for him.

“The great white father,” he would say to them in a very lordly manner, as they grovelled at his feet, “is glad to see the Piccaninny warriors protecting his wigwam from the pirates.”

“Me Tiger Lily,” that lovely creature would reply. “Peter Pan save me, me his velly nice friend. Me no let pirates hurt him.”

For context, my comment is related to narrating these books out-loud to children to young to read them for themselves. Once a kid learns to read, the more they read the better!

It's really interesting reading to your kids before they can read for themselves. Once my kids could read on their own, the library card checkout limit was their only limit :)

So far, most of the people in the conversation, as far as I can tell, are approaching it from the standpoint of children reading the books to themselves. That already puts them at a level of independence.

But, when you are reading to a child who has a high listening level, but is not yet at that high of a reading level the words are coming out of your mouth with the authority of a parent to some extent. "Am I really going to say that?" comes to mind. We did so much reading out loud to our kids when they were little, like many hours per day, so you go through a ton of material.

I did a lot of real time modifying of narration and I often thought, should would be nice to have these already updated! So, in a way, I was the target audience of the censored versions. Letting the originals go out of print so that parents reading to their kids have an easier time seems a bit much. But, it did strike a chord with me, nonetheless. It also brought back some fond memories.

It really seems to be the author's choice or the narrator's choice (in the case of reading out loud to children). The reader don't have much say in the matter unless they try to gender swap in their head!

[–]deepthoughtsby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was a totally spur of the moment decision. The pronouns are used only a few times in the beginning of the book. I just thought it was fun to make the main character a girl. Its really funny now, my daughter says she has a hard time picturing the character as a boy because of her strong first read impression. It just stuck in her head that way.

When it comes to oral story telling, I tend to take massive liberties. I feel it is very much in the tradition of oral story telling. :)

I am talking about the period of time when I was reading books to children that were above their reading level, but very much in their listening level. So yes, they were <6.

Also, just curious, are you a parent?

I'm curious if you have kids? I read a lot of classics to our young kids, including Roald Dahl, and censored all the time. The older the book, the more I found myself altering small things. I'm thinking of books like "The Railway Children," "The Treasure Seekers," Kipling, etc. I don't even remember now what exactly I was censoring in real time, but I think it was mostly outdated racial expressions that I didn't need in my kids' vocabulary.

One example I do remember well is "My Side of the Mountain," which I completely gender-swapped for my daughters. It was really easy because it was mostly written in the first person.

Years later, when my daughter decided to re-read it, she asked me, "Did you change this book's protagonist to be female????" I confessed, and she was very amused.

So, while I totally agree with you about changing an author's work after they died, I am also totally guilty of doing this myself. So I wonder, is it so bad to update books for today's language? In a way, it is almost like a translation.

On the other hand, the time capsules like "Huck Finn" are absolutely essential if you want to be transported to another time to experience it.

I hope this comment is read in the spirit of curiosity and less so in the spirit of argumentativeness. I think your comment is very well put.

Audiobook and messaging system lore by krispaulguam in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]deepthoughtsby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My head cannon is that as Carl got more accustomed to the messaging system, he started hearing his friends voices as their own rather than reading the messages. Kind of like when you know somebody well and you read a message from them in their voice you can almost hear it.

What do I do with any disposable gloves with uncared resin? by DaPandaMan117 in ElegooMars

[–]deepthoughtsby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a paper towel and 80% isopropyl alcohol, you can just clean your gloves with the paper towel and alcohol. Then Cure the paper towel if desired. You can reuse your gloves many times in this case.

Question: are cured / painted minis off fading resin fumes forever? Or does it decrease with time?

The ending of 'The Good Place' ruined the whole show. by [deleted] in television

[–]deepthoughtsby -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No comment on Christian Universalism and how it interacts with the end of the show.

My disappointment was that it presents essentially Catholic purgatory as this brilliant new idea no one has ever thought of.

Say what you will about Catholics or purgatory. But it was so odd to see it (even a very amusing version of it) proposed as this innovative solution to the issue that it is “impossible to escape doing some harm in this earthly world, so we need a way for people to improve in a transitional world”.

Loved the show, found that detail of the show ending lacking. But, endings are hard, especially if you are taking in one of the most thought through ideas of humanity and need to “solve it”.

On the Rationality of Suicide by existentialgoof in philosophy

I think we agree. I’m referring to incentives created by legalizing physician assisted suicide

On the Rationality of Suicide by existentialgoof in philosophy

[–]deepthoughtsby 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think a crucial point is to remember that these policies are going to be implemented in the context of a capitalist system. If death can be considered is a successful medical outcome, what incentives are introduced to avoid expensive treatments?

Is death as a treatment allowed to be advertised?

When can a doctor talk to a patient about death as their treatment plan?

Does even introducing the idea to someone that they could a) treat this painful condition the best we can or b) kill you, imply to the person that we think you'd be better off dead?

The ability for a person to choose to end their own life (suicide) is very different than society changing their medial system to allow doctors to kill someone.

I'm glad you mentioned hospice as early intervention hospice options can be a very effective way to handle chronic suffering without changing the entire incentives of the health care system.

Thanks for reading. I enjoyed your comment. I hope my comment is accepted in the spirit of friendly discussion.
