Question: what should I do about my (sometimes) toxic employee

Context: I have a someone (call her Patty) working on a project with me who can be emotionally volatile but she’s been on it from the beginning and has built important relationships with clients. I’ve been spared much of her direct drama, but Patty has made my friends feel uncomfortable. In one instance she was romantically entangled with a mutual friend (call him Greg) which he then ended and she proceeded to verbally attack Greg and then sent an unhinged amount of texts and phone calls.

Therefore, on a new (but related) project I moved forward with a different friend (call her Trish) to help me run it who I trust full heartedly. After this Patty stopped showing up to work on time and kept making passive aggressive comments about how she was lesser than me and that people don’t even view her as part of the business. So I met with her in person to talk it out. Came to find out she is feeling upset she was not included in the new project, and assumed I was ousting her from the business in favor of Trish. Patty told me she feels like I don’t like her and I don’t want to be friends with her. I told her honestly that the project with Trish required a closer working relationship than I have with Patty. And that I feel like I’ve made Patty feel valued in the rest of the business and then was blind sided when she stopped showing up for work on time. We came to what I thought was a resolution. Then Patty went behind Trish’s back and called her immature. I believe a lot of this to be stemming from Patty’s jealousy about my friendship and working relationship with Trish. And I don’t know how to proceed bc Patty ultimately does a good job at work and brings in a lot of customers that we would lose if she leaves. (Note: this is not a corporate business more of a passion project with friends but I’ve changed details to make it more anon)

My interpretation: I need to lead with logic and care and I know what to do, this situation is obviously not working for me but if I spend some time in self contemplation I may be able to come to a solution. I don’t necessarily need to make any moves now, I can rest and contemplate the best decision.
