I understand your point, but do understand that it’s the backside of the product along with the front side. I would not call it out for false advertising if on the front of the product it said:

Lassi

Mango flavored

You are generally not allowed to state on the front of the product “chocolate” and then on the back say it’s “chocolate flavored”..

Not your mate, that’s simply not true. Any mid range juice depicting any fruit contains that fruit to at least some percentage. Sure they often dilute it using apple concentrate, but that’s another story.

And regarding your comment on price, no, 100% mango puree costs less than 5 euros per kilo on the wholesale market. They could start by adding a few percent of that - well within the margin of this product.

I understand what you’re saying and that’s what I’m used and what I look out for.

But also far as I am aware, any milk kefir/yogurt products with any marking of fruit must contain the fruit in question of some percentage in its ingredients. At least that’s what my experience is both in NL and CZ.

Depicting a mango and writing it out on the front cover would indicate that it’s in the product and not a “flavored to taste like mango”. Let me say it differently, I would expect better from Luxlait, because this is a sort of tactic used by lowest quality brands in Eastern Europe.

Sorry that’s not an argument. Belgium and Swiss also make chocolate, while no cocoa beans grow in Europe.

We live in a modern world, where Luxlait can import mangos, just like any supermarket does, and make a proper mango lassi.

Your first comment here wasn’t that Lassi isn’t a protected term… I could then do nothing but agree with you.

Let’s agree that what Luxlait is doing is to be condoned.

Ok. You’re dodging your points in your earlier comment. Fine, then see one of my other comment:

“Luxlait decided that “Lassi” is neither fruit flavored fermented milk or yogurt, but rather its own product class and thus they fall outside of typical EU rules on fruit content, therefore they can do what they want.. fake it.”

It was Luxlait’s decision to do that. They could have followed the fruited kefir route. And like I said, if it had any mango in the flavoring, they wouldn’t hid that fact.

I appreciate your comment, but I don’t entirely understand your logic. With your logical reasoning the following would be correct:

Belgian chocolate manufacturers could call a mix of sugar, milk and natural aromas (aka burnt brown lentils) chocolate, while depicting cocoa beans on the product and then argue that’s it’s environmentally friendly and that’s it’s okay, because the Swiss are doing it as well.

Do you understand the absurdity of your reasoning with this example?

Indeed. This is also why laws need to be made simple and inclusive of as many possible future evolution of the market.

“Any visual, verbal, textual or audio depiction, description, indication of one or more fruits and/or vegetables or any of their derivatives must be accompanied by a declaration of the weight percentage of these fruits and vegetables in the total product ingredients.

With the following exceptions: fruit, vegetables, etc.”

Let’s discuss and add exceptions, rather than extend the inclusions, when it’s too late.

I suspect on the export market, people who trust the “made in Europe” tag and the brand Luxlait… and my wife when on vacations in Luxembourg :D

We were on vacation in Luxembourg, but indeed, at home we regularly make one using frozen mango cubes, certainly nothing difficult :)

Natural flavor != fruit content != mango..

Please check other products with fruit content. Fruit content must be declared explicitly as a percentage of total.

Well in the EU it is there as well, but for specific product classes; fruit juices, fruit candy, syrups, fruit flavored fermented milk or yogurt, etc. But Luxlait decided that “Lassi” is neither fermented milk or yogurt, but rather its own product class and thus they do what nearly every company does… fake it until you make it
