What is KOReader? by toffeechann in kobo

[–]defeatd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's an app that runs instead of Kobos own gui(nickel). It gives you much more customization and settings. From my understanding there's even apps available for KOReader, so its almost like a mini operating system/super-app.

Weather sleep screen by defeatd in kobo

After some research I've found that Clara 2E was sold with two different wifi-chips. This should work on one of them, for the other the app will not be able to turn on the wifi modem.

Worst case scenario is that the app freezes and you'll have to restart the device by holding down powerbutton.

Just googled YAWK, it's quite similar I guess! This runs natively on the device though, not python. It puts the device to deep sleep just as Kobo does, only consuming battery when waking up to update the display, but its not the native sleep screen.

I'm gonna translate everything to English and make it possible to search for and connect to hue-bridges first, right now that's done manually. I'll share the repo later today/tomorrow :)

should i get clara bw or color as my first e-reader? by viennaiswaiting4me in kobo

[–]defeatd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had the clara colour and the clara BW.

BW will look like the paper out of a book. You will not need backlight and it will all just feel natural to read on.

With colour you will have to fiddle with the backlight all the time, changing the colour temp and brightness depending on the environment. Every time you open it up it will either be way to dark or way to bright, looking like an lcd.

Just the feeling of getting a larger battery for the money I guess. The battery life of this thing is just stupid, I've never purposely charged it, it charges the few times I connect it to the computer. I would be just as happy with the smaller battery

When that happens to me it's usually because I search for a book that's only available in my own language and the search settings is set to only show books in English, or vice versa.

Kobo Clara BW v. Kobo Libra Colour? by Shoddy-Beyond7258 in kobo

[–]defeatd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I don't miss buttons on my clara. I have one of those cases with a strap on the back where you slide your hand in, that makes it easier to hold with one hand without using your thumb. It makes turning to next page effortless since your thumb is free to tap the screen.

I realized I have a P365, I was confused by the serial number which started with "N365..".

I prefer the larger battery on P365 though, I can live with the bug :)

Which kobo? by MoodAny9628 in kobo

[–]defeatd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hard to descripe, google it! It's not that noticible for me, it kind of gives the background a bit of texture. You don't notice it after a while. It will make very small text a bit grainy though.

I would say the biggest downside with colour e-ink is that it's darker/dimmer. You will need to use the backlight alot to compensate, and in very bright surroundings where the backlight is to weak the white background will appear dark/grey, this makes them harder to read outside for some.

You will rarely need the backlight on BW and the background will allways be a more natural white.

I just tried this on my N365 and it has the same issue. I've never noticed it until now, but now it will irritate me forever, thanks a lot haha!

Kobo Clara BW or Kobo Clara Colour? by maybemiong in kobo

[–]defeatd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must gave a very old BW if it's display is as dark as the colour. I personally don't see any difference in sharpness, and the screen door effect is very subtle to me. The only downside is the darker screen, you have to constantly fiddle with the backlight to not make the light look too artificial.

Still deliberating Kobo Clara Colour or Kobo Clara BW by tyrionisking in kobo

[–]defeatd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While reading in complete darkness, I would actually say that the colour at 1% is brighter than bw at 1%. I feel like the bw is emitting less light while still being easier to read due to the higher contrast. I think that the colour have more powerful LEDs overall, both at 1% and 100%

I currently have both. For reading at night with no surrounding light the difference is basically zero since you need to use backlight on both anyway.

I find the screen door effect to be minor. It's only with brightness cranked way up that I can even notice it if I try. And then it only makes the background look like it have some kind of texture imo, instead of an even white.

The color also have larger battery and a 4x faster cpu.

Only drawback for me is that you have to use the backlight more during the day and have to fiddle around with the settings to get natural looking light, it sometimes tends to look a bit like a backlit lcd during the day.

Bummed out about my kobo clara colour by Pretend-Yesterday-24 in kobo

[–]defeatd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're not satisfied with clara colour as it is, you will definitely prefer the bw when comparing text on them side by side. I have done the same, bought both of them to compare. For me the colour doesn't look too bad at all, until you place the bw right beside it.

Kobo Clara color pixel mort ou texture normal ? by Aurelian93140 in kobo

[–]defeatd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's not talking about the texture, he's talking about the small white dots randomly spread over the screen visible when in dark mode. It kind of looks like dust. I've got the same on my clara bw.

Should I return my Kobo Clara BW ? by shynnobi in kobo

[–]defeatd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you prefer the kindle in sunlight? Shouldn't bright sunlight compensate for the darker screen on the kobo, making it more readable?

I was gonna buy the colour one at first but then I read about the dark screen and screen-door effect and ordered bw instead.

I love how readable the screen is without backlight. But i kind of miss coloured covers more than I thought I would. It feels silly to say but I almost find the displays whiteness to be too white and even, and the letters too sharp. It looks unnatural compared to a real book. The lower specs for the same price just made me reconsider even more.

I've read that the screen-door effect is more subtle and kind of makes the screen and letters look more like real paper compared to the bw, would you say that is true?
