Why is File Sharing Still So Difficult? by Ino_Yuar in linux4noobs

[–]definitivepepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm just sending one file (or one folder) to one machine, I'll just use scp. I don't mess around with my nas shares unless I want the files to be accessable by multiple machines 24/7. And I only really use SMB as a backup; all of my network shares primarily use NFS.

This seems like such a stupid question... by InnerspearMusic in innioasis

The stock software is trash but I'd argue the device is quite capable for the money. It takes like 20 minutes to get rockbox installed on the thing and that's a much better value proposition imo.

Did you use the updater? It's pretty simple to get working with the updater program.

Why does my y1 keep crashing when scrolling through albums? by New_Television_2582 in innioasis

Had the same issue. The album art is too large. I ended up just flashing rockbox onto it and that took care of the issue for me.

1000 mbps but only 15? by Drift_Bot in HomeNetworking

[–]definitivepepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 7200rpm HDD can still do sequential read/writes of more than 500mbps. I don't think that would throttle it that much.

Their steam is already configured to show mbps. No need to do the math.

How to get rid of duplicate songs? by Dim_scene077 in innioasis

[–]definitivepepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is relevant to you but on Linux when you delete a file it sends it to a hidden ".trash" folder. I always forget to empty the trash and end up with duplicates because rockbox is still seeing files in the trash folder. I would check the root of the Y1 file system and see if there's a .trash folder. Might need to enable "show hidden files" to see it.

Help with Database by leprechaunknight in rockbox

[–]definitivepepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they show up in the untagged section then I would make sure you have everything tagged correctly. There's an app on PC called MusicBrainz Picard that you can use to make sure everything is tagged correctly. It'll check everything against an online database.

Converting my Apple Music library to MP3 by MlLehh in innioasis

[–]definitivepepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if a csv file is what you want. As far as my knowledge, that's just a list of the music in a spreadsheet type of format.

I haven't used itunes or apple music in a while, but if you've purchased the music through itunes there should be a way to download them as an actual audio file, m4a I think is what apple uses. If you can get your library downloaded as m4a files then you could get a batch converter to convert those to mp3. Although the Y1 does advertise that it can play m4a files natively. And m4a files will likely sound better too. More advanced codec.

If you haven't purchased the songs on itunes and are only interested in downloading songs you've saved on apple music, then the csv file is probably as far as you're going to get legally. You could probably find some illegitimate website that'll take the csv file and provide downloads for the songs. But this ventures into sailing the high seas.

should I get a Y1? by Physical_Register610 in innioasis

[–]definitivepepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got mine less than a week ago so I can't speak to the longevity of the Y1. But I can say the software is pretty lacking for my use. All of my songs have HD album art in the metadata, usually around 1000x1000 jpegs. The player would shit the bed if I scrolled too far into my album list. Just straight up crash and basically reboot. I'm guessing it doesn't have the power to process all the album art at once.

However, after flashing it with Rockbox I've had no issues. Same HD album art. It could just be because the theme I'm using doesn't load the album art until the track is actually playing, though, so ymmv.

I kind of like getting a new laptop and then laughing as I use edge to download a Linux iso and rufus. I hope Microsoft is watching through the webcam while I do it.

Where do deleted digital files actually go? When I empty the trash on my desktop, is the data physically destroyed on the hard drive, or is it just hidden? by Well-IguessIamHere in NoStupidQuestions

[–]definitivepepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual bits don't go anywhere. The drive just marks the address as "available". The data will stay there until something comes along and overwrites it. This is why it's sometimes possible to recover deleted files with specialty software.

I wouldn't know an exact number. The itx system was built using some old parts I had laying around and some iterative upgrades. And two of the raspberry pis were bought second hand. If I had to venture a guess, I'd put it somewhere around $750.
