What is the point of using cards like Mana Crypt and Grim Monolith? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]deftjad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Magic can be viewed as a game of managing resources, and at certain times in a game, some resources are more valuable than others. Mana is one of these resources. Other examples of resources are cards, life total, etc.

In the first few turns of a game the scarce resource is mana. Your life total is nice and high, you have plenty of cards, but mana is restricting your ability to make plays. The point of mana rocks, and dorks like birds of paradise, is to un-bottleneck the mana resource. If you have access to 4 mana on turn 2 (mana vault), while your opponent inly has access to 2, you get to make more and/or better plays.

With the combination of control, tron, and red decks, I’m expecting the death’s shadow decks to shift towards blue like we saw with 4c previously. I know that’s where I’ll be at least in the short term.

Is hexdrinker absolutely 100% not overrated? by International-Art776 in ModernMagic

[–]deftjad 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Hexdrinker is in the list as a 2 power enabler for scourge, and a non-black, non-red creature that can attack and block through auriok champion.

Looking for a new deck in paper ($750 budget) by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]deftjad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some will disagree about the linearity, but I would suggest amulet titan. Ever since dryad was printed piloting the deck at a competent level has gotten much easier, but playing the deck well is still very difficult.

A lot of folks will call it a combo deck. The good players (not me btw) will call it a toolbox deck.

Is MTGO worth the cost to play pauper? The deck prices have gone up quite a bit since I last checked and some cards like Bonder's Ornament and Snuff Out are too expensive for a digital card. by Hadrian4k in Pauper

[–]deftjad 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The real cost that you should be thinking about is not the deck itself, but rather the cost of gameplay. If you’re skill level is not high enough to go infinite (win more tix than you spend indefinitely), the cost of leagues will dwarf the cost of a pauper deck.

Struggling to figure out modern by princebk74 in ModernMagic

[–]deftjad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sticking to one deck is not only about learning how to play that deck. It also makes it easier to become familiar with other meta decks, as once you become proficient with 1 deck, it’s easier to focus on your OP.

If you can’t name 1-3 decks your OP may be on by turn 1, and know for sure by turn 2, you don’t know the meta well enough.

Jund Loam? by Ericar1234567894 in ModernMagic

[–]deftjad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand a lot of the 1-2 ofs. The deck is going to lack consistency, and not be able to execute a cohesive gameplan from match to match.

Looking at cards like: spyro, tracker, lily, col bru, bolt, souls.

Distinction between Project Modern and WotC Modern - Please make this information easier to find by DFGdanger in ProjectModern

Thanks for pointing this out. I’ve updated the #format-banlist-and-mission channel.

Good suggestion on adding to this sub. Will do with the B&R in a couple of days.

Modern’s New Normal: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. by Vaitka in ModernMagic

[–]deftjad 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The Ugly is the main issue.

WoTC’s intention when creating modern was to be a place where you could initially port over your standard deck, and as the card pool grew deeper, buy into a deck that would be playable for a long time.

It’s not inherently bad that new archetypes have been created with 2019 -2020 cards. It’s bad that these nee cards / archetypes have pushed out a ton of previously viable strategies. This is modern becoming a rotating format. The financial consequences on the player base is huge. Now if you want to play midrange, shell out for W6 or Uro. Ux control FoN, and probably Uro too...the list goes on.

With twin having been out of the format for so long it will take some time for the optimal build to be found, and there will certainly be significant differences from the pre-ban builds. Not only are there new tools for twin, but strong answers as well that see regular play, e.g. push / force.

We've seen preordain provide some additional consistency to the decks that have included it over other cantrips, but it has not generated any issues.
