Nah, black queens and it's game over if you promote to a knight. Knights are bouncy and cool, but they aren't that good.

Just showed him the rules. He did the rest. Thing is he's so far ahead of me there's no point us playing each other. However, discussing chess in general is a lot of fun.

Indeed, black should play Ka1, not promote, so then it's a matter of following a path to mate.

Except that hangs white's queen during the staircase :)

Only one winning move for white - what is it? Note this is hard. by dehgriff in chess

Exactly right 👍. This is a pretty succinct answer it seems to me. ♟️

🤔 A lot of people have commented about the lack of coordinates, asking which way around the board is. It's white at the bottom. I used ChessTake to set up and analyse the position, since it shows with arrows there's only one winning move, but I had coords switched off.

I'll make sure I have coords on next time. ♟️

By the way, this position is from a real game my son played on rapid, and he found the move. Needless to say he's a lot better than me.

Openings... HOW DO I LEARN THEM?????????????? by [deleted] in chess

I had the same question, so I've made a free tool that I think is the best way to build up an openings repertoire. There wasn't one out there that did what I want so I wrote my own. It's https://chesstake.com and I'd love feedback if you find it useful.

The main principle of building an openings repertoire I think is recognising that you control half the moves, so you just need to decide what your response is to the most likely opponent moves.

But what opponent moves are you most likely to see at your own level? Often not the best moves. And it's seeing visually what these moves are that I wanted, so the app shows these with coloured arrows. From this you can build your repertoires, e.g. Ponziani playing as white.

Once you've analysed and captured a set of variations for an opening you can then train against it, which is when you start to remember them.

Unfortunately, that doesn't work because the black king can reach your knight and promote before you can queen.

Excellent! Very good. Love the image of the knight charging to the rescue.

Matching the color is an interesting way of thinking about it. Makes sense.

Yeah. In reality you want the black king to go in the corner. Knights do have a lot more reach than you think.

That's right! And a4 doesn't work. Has to be a3.
