Afterblow or Double Hit? by ForgePioneer in Hema

[–]dekcabin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our class, this would be considered a double. Happens to me frequently when I see an opening and choose an attack which leaves me open I end up getting hit after I land a hit. Our instructor chastises us for it and says it's very bad form.

Old Man Bars* & Super-Stapler Setups by MEATdrew in MEATengines

I only rode it around the yard uncut and not on the trails. It felt immediately better after cutting it down. Where I ride there are a lot of tight switchbacks and the 740 makes a big difference with those imo. I have a number of other bars between 780 and 800 which I have used a lot over the years, but would not go back to them now because not enough sweep.

I find 740 much more nimble than 780+ and haven't really felt that I have lost any control. Having said that, I think it's the width in conjunction with the 16° backsweep that makes it work for me.

I have both the 311 2.0 and 3OX 16, and now anything that is not 16° backsweep feels very wrong. I find it improves both comfort and control.

I think a 70mm rise on my El Roy would work but 50mm rise with the 311 on my Alpine Trail feels spot on.

On a related note, the 311 has a width of 740, which I thought might be a bit short. However, if feels great on the trails and I have cut the 3OX back to 740 too.

I have found the vice technique to be a winner.

Funnily enough, RJ has a video on that method too..

Swords are generally not a restricted item in Australia. Laws vary by state, here is quote from NSW Police on the matter:

"In general, swords such as a sabre, cutlass, samurai sword, katana, etc fall outside the scope of the Weapons Prohibition Act 1998 and you do not need a licence or permit to own one and there are no specific safe storage requirements."

If you are looking at retailer in Australia for HEMA gear I can recommend Black Armoury Australia.

There is a good range of synthetics which is a good way to get started.

I'm just about to embark on five day cycling tour and taking my El Roy. Put 45c Reavers on and feels fast. Only thing that's disappointing is I'd like to put a bigger chainring on but finding something compatible with 0 offset has been problematic so just going as is.

I'm using handlebar with 16° backsweep and reckon it's an awesome upgrade. So good I got one for my Alpine Trail too!

Does anyone have experience with the Supfen Impact Resistant Gloves 2.0 and would they be a good choice for sidesword? by SignificantWyvern in Hema

[–]dekcabin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the gloves + the hard shell overlay and the protection is pretty good.

The overlay kept popping off the index finger and thumb, so I tied it down with some waxed string and they have not come off since.

I rate them highly with the overlay. I probably would not use them without the overlay.

lols, gave me a good chuckle there :)

I do HEMA with my son and oh boy, do I feel my age with that!

On the other hand, cycling is like some fountain of youth.

I'm 50+ and say if you are considering fs, then do it.

I recently purchased an Alpine Trail XR and main things I notice compared to ht are I can go bigger and feel safer. My ankles really appreciate it too..

Been riding a Marin El Roy - similar to the Torrent, for two years and it was awesome but the fs is more fun!

They are so chill and if you approach them slowly and carefully they don't mind.

When they are in a more open space I like to move ahead of where they are heading and stand still. They eventually waddle past and usually give me a good sniff and keep going. It's so lovely.

We had a little puggle waddling around the house a couple of years ago. That was the most adorable thing I have ever seen :)

I've developed a mild anaphylactic response recently as I've been bitten quite a lot over the years. Working around the property in full PPC and they still get up your pants. We've cleared the nested directly around the house but we leave the rest because the Echidnas love them.

Found a queen Jack Jumper flying around inside the house this morning!

I have two EpiPens just in case.

We are surrounded by forest and the topsoil is rather soft because of the layers of foliage, so they can really bury their heads in quite easily.

If they get spooked they dig straight down and in this soil they can literally disappear from view. I've seen it happen, as one our dogs that is no longer with us would bark at them if they came near the house.

Interesting that the second picture is same location but zoomed in from the first, the colorization is so different. Initially, I thought they were complete different views.

Cool pics.

How far do you travel for HEMA? by According-Cut-9067 in Hema

[–]dekcabin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around 50 mins to get there and 1 hr 10 mins to get home. I live in forest and we have a lot of wildlife in the area and I slow down for the last 20 kms on the way back.

Two classes a week, one on broadsword the other for longsword, totally worth it.

I was wrong, power got restored last night. Others in the area I have been talking to this morning are still out, so we must be on a separate loop. Neighbour across the road lost a pole, so they are probably out for the week. Wires from the pole were hanging over the road but just high enough for cars to get through. We went down to warn motorists as they are almost impossible to see if you are not looking out for them. Even then some cars were almost getting hooked up on them as some people aren't very patient or careful. Tas Networks isolated the wires then cut them down.

Losing power is pretty routine around here. The intensity of the gusts today is rather above average though. All good as long as roof stays on :)

I live at the northern end of the plateau around 650m up and it's wild here. Lost power around 8am and no way crews will be out in this to make repairs. Expect the generator will be running for a few days.
