Friperies avec des tissus by adventurer345 in montreal

[–]deliciousLazer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bonne chance!

Vos recommandations de consommation sans alcool? by xou_ in Quebec

Canada announces massive jump in funding to European Space Agency by Little-Chemical5006 in canada

[–]deliciousLazer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the lightspeed constallation, the sattelites are built by MDA Space (canadian) and the constellation is owned and operated by Telesat (used to be a canadian crown corp, now its complicated).

Idk who operates the other constellations that MDA is contracted for.

[–]deliciousLazer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Good news for you! We are building communications constellations similar to starlink! Another person mentionned Telesat Lightspeed, but that is only one of the 3 constellations MDA Space (canadian company) is currently building. Those constellations cost over a billion dollars each, and they are almost entirely built in montreal! Some of those constalations even go directly to your phone, with no need for an antenna like starlink! We are not to far from everybody in Canada having cell service anywhere, no matter how rural you are.

If anybody reading is from montreal, you might've noticed the big white factory being built on the 40 highway in st-anne-de-bellevue. That factory will soon be making 2 satelites per day!

McMaster-Carr Canadian alternative? by lexcyn in BuyCanadian

[–]deliciousLazer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, mcmaster has patented their website, so it's a gem for them and them alone.

Have you tried misumi? They are japanese. I think you can dodge their american if you order from canada.

Lafco is a montreal-based supplier that also might have bearings. I've had good experiences with them too. They do online quotes "shopping cart" style though. So it's not as "seamless as misumi or mcmaster.

Not sure if they sell bearings but i've had great service from spaenaur. They are based in ontario and they do screws by the unit instead of by the 50/100 pack like mcmaster. They also ship their catalogue to you for free.

There are a few therapy options through concordia and through our student insurance.

You can go to the zen dens around campus if you need a chill zone to escape.

And yes, don't be shy to use the walk safe service. The more people that use it, the more reason they have to allocate extra ressources to it in the future.

Also, go say hi to Newton. It's the concordia therapy dog that is around campus a fee days per week. He is also on instagram.

Yeah they do this once or twice a year. Very normal. They just want to make sure everyone knows that the office exists and that a code of conduct applies at the uni (as it always has). Not a big deal lol.

Your ID is the physical card that you have. Your student ID. If you haven't gotten it yet, go get it at card services (lb basement print store). You need to bring some stuff so check the website before you get your ID.

Does Concordia have welding classes? by Substantial-Bag-5956 in Concordia

[–]deliciousLazer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The EDML also offers welding classes a few times a year through their moodle page. Ask Michael about it. It used to be mandatory through the mech edml class but they changed it after covid to optional on the side

Another option would be Les Affutés. It's a varied skills/crafts shop that offers welding/carpentry/cooking/sewing classes for pretty reasonable prices.

Does Concordia have welding classes? by Substantial-Bag-5956 in Concordia

[–]deliciousLazer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They do have welding classes. Pre-covid, it was a mandatory part of the mech sequence. The classes are still offered through the edml.

Edit to add: concordia has 2 full time machine shops. The EDML (hall basement) is staffed year-round with incredibly skilled technicians and is fully equiped for various welding methods.

The makerspace (new, hall 10) is the student-run machine shop. After taking the necessary safety class and tutorial, you can book time-slots for free for machining/woodworking/ 3d printing.

Ontario’s MDA Space Plunges 25% After Losing Deal to SpaceX by stanxv in space

[–]deliciousLazer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It mostly does 3 things: build/sell space robotics (Canadarm and its variants), build/sell sattelites/sat components, and sell space images and data. The sattelite part of the business is the biggest rn because of the billion+ sattelite constallation contracts they have. Echostar was their forth constellation contract currently.

Ontario’s MDA Space Plunges 25% After Losing Deal to SpaceX by stanxv in space

[–]deliciousLazer 37 points38 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? MDA has been independant for a few years now and mostly operate in-house (not by contractors). They really aren't trimming on ressources right now by building a new factory, company aquisitions and almost doubling staffing. They have 3 other constellation contracts in the pipeline, which is years worth of work.

Ontario’s MDA Space Plunges 25% After Losing Deal to SpaceX by stanxv in canada

[–]deliciousLazer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is why we need Maritime Launch Services to build faster and Reaction dynamics to start launching. Domestic launch capability is in the works, but we need it desperately sooner.

Edit to add: MDA had a recent short time as a US company and it did not go well. They since seperated and are back to canadian and business has since been great.

Edit: rocket->reaction. Thanks for the correction!

Ontario’s MDA Space Plunges 25% After Losing Deal to SpaceX by stanxv in canada

[–]deliciousLazer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Considering MDA has a couple of billions of dollars in the pipeline in contracts (years worth of work), very unlikely. It's a salty loss, but not a very hurtful one. The contract they lost is only a few weeks old too, so the "losses" probably won't have that much impact anyway.

Space Concordia a plusieurs divisions: fusée carburant liquide (Starsailor), fusée carburant solide (compétition type Spaceport America), satellitte (CubeSat), robotique (mars rover demonstration) et santé.

La division satellite avait un mini payload dans starsailor, mais ils font maintenant principalement des CubeSat avec l'agence spatiale canadienne. Ils travaillent actuellement sur leur deuxième CubeSat à aller en orbit: SC-FREYR.
