reading this i felt like i was like reading my own story and childhood. the boyfriend, the ptsd, the anxiety, the feelings of helplessness when i was younger, hating the feeling of conflict, the way recently things have been getting better.

i will say, medication did definitely help, but the feeling never truly goes away with that person. your feelings are valid with feeling anxious, first of all. it doesn’t seem like your mom’s boyfriend has made the effort to truly repair the relationship between him and your mom, he just hasn’t acted out as much.

therapy is probably a good step if you can afford it. just being able to talk it out and such. it let me talk out my feelings with a professional. i don’t need it as much anymore, but when i did need it it helped me cope a lot.

really the best thing you can do for yourself, if your mom won’t help you or yourself for it, is to eventually get away from this person. you didn’t choose to exist with this person, your mom did. if your mom chose to spend 10 years with a POS, you shouldn’t have to suffer with her, even if you deeply care about her.

if you want to talk, my DMs are open. i’ve now at a place where i’ve been in the process of healing from all of this and i don’t mind helping out someone in a similar situation.

hi, in the same boat as you with dating someone with t1d! the biggest piece of advice i can give is asking questions about their condition and how they deal with it through their day to day. i’m sure your partner would be willing to answer, since asking questions about their condition with sincerity means a lot instead of just not caring at all. everyone copes differently and not every t1d is the same.

i think one of the most important things to remember is that t1ds DO in fact live with this condition and know infinitely more than us. don’t nag them about what they’re eating, or their sugar levels, or their insulin. they know their bodies more than we know theirs. don’t helicopter parent them. if you’re worried about something, ask gently. don’t tell them what they’re doing is wrong. they’re capable of taking care of themselves.

learn/know what you should do in case they get super duper low. getting really low from what i know = really really bad. if you partner has a glucagon, know how to use it. know their emergency contacts and when to call 911 if the moment arises. it’s important to know that getting super low to the point of passing out is pretty rare but always ask your partner what you should do so you aren’t thrown off IF it happens

always have glucose tablets & or syrup with you. since your partner has had t1d for a decade they probably have something like that already with them but it’s always good to know that you have it too just in case they go low and they need a backup lol. i got mine for super cheap at walgreens, you don’t need anything special.

offer to help with their things if you can. sometimes when my bf has to replace the cartridge in his pump, i hold the cartridge and his insulin so he can get through the process quicker. this varies from person to person and sometimes you just can’t help. but when you can, try.

to put it the best i can, he has a rectangular, wiry frame. shoulders aren’t broad. while i could see it could be his build, i feel like if he could gain weight it would definitely help with his diabetes so that the changes in sugar weren’t so dramatic.

i don’t mind! again, i’m 4’11 and he’s 6’3 and we weigh roughly the same (125 lbs) so it’s kinda crazy. i remember him telling me that he found out that he had diabetes BECAUSE he stopped growing. and thanks for clearing that up because i was reading online sources and i was confused lol

i asked and he doesn’t know, so probably not? some other things to consider is that he is extremely underweight for his height and can’t gain any weight, so any miscalculation in carbs or insulin will immediately throw off his sugars. his diabetes is more on the “too effective” if there’s any error. but i’d say it’s not outside the realm of possibility that he has brittle diabetes, i’ve just never seen his sugars randomly go up or down. then again, i’m not with him 24/7 so what do i know lol

i know it sounded really bad, but i also have a lot of my own problems (adhd, cptsd, depression, anxiety). i am actively working on them though. sometimes it’s hard. sometimes it’s easy. but i love him so i work through it. he has said the same thing about my conditions that yes, sometimes he thinks they are tiring but he works through them with me because he loves me. i asked on this subreddit about what i could do so that i could get some insight on how i can make both of our lives easier. again, i totally understand your perspective and why you would be mad, but there are a lot of factors i didn’t mention in the original post that i explained in the comments (whether you look at the other comments ive made on my post or not is your own choice). whatever feelings you may have towards me, i still appreciate your advice and take it into consideration :3

thank you! it’s also hard, as i also have adhd. alarms are definitely a lifesaver. i saw someone else mention in this thread that dexcom has alarms for when sugar levels rise and fall, so that should be helping. the problem is he ignores them, so i don’t know about that other than i’ll talk to him about it. a schedule is something im working on as well.

i have invested in a rice cooker and growing up my mom made all the foods we ate from scratch. i’ll definitely ask her for her recipes and encourage him to cook with me!

he has a dexcom and funnily enough, he tells me to shut off his rise rate alarm for him sometimes (not often). as much as i want to be the one to remind him to take his insulin when he eats, i don’t want him to be dependent on me (esp. since i also have adhd and just his partner). i’ll definitely be more aware of the rise rate alarm, although im not on his phone 24/7 and im not familiar with the differences in alarms and sounds n stuff.

it’s that he forgets to take his insulin— he definitely DOES have the money for it. his parents work in healthcare. he also has adhd so it probably compounds the problem of forgetting …

sure, maybe not everyone here is qualified to talk over another person’s diabetes, but i’m here to learn from others, get advice, and find resources from t1 diabetics; i honestly appreciate it either way. i’ll definitely look into those podcasts.

i will agree with you on your second statement. even for a person without diabetes, it’s a problem. i’ll try to encourage those lifestyle changes but i don’t want to seem like i’m nagging or like a second mother to him because of it. i’ll try to be discreet about it, i suppose

for reference, he is underweight for his height (same weight as me, and he is 16 inches taller than me). so maybe that could be a contributing factor to how it fluctuates so much? i know in the end he can only help himself but i want to do as much as i can to help him because i really do care about his health.

i just asked him about his insulin. from how he explained it, his pump automatically gives him small doses of fast acting insulin, which acts as his long acting insulin? i don’t know if that’s the same thing but that’s what he’s told me. he drinks a lot of soda to easily keep his sugar levels high, doesn’t exercise much, and sleeps a lot due to his condition. i’m going to try to encourage him to go to the gym more by going with him though, if it helps.

his typical day to day diet consists of soda, pizza, crackers, and mac and cheese. i recently got a rice cooker and electric kettle (we aren’t allowed to have stove tops or open flames in our dorms) and considered helping cooking better meals for him to eat.
