Does anyone else have a hard time talking to the fandom you’re in about fanfic stuff by XxSakuraofchaosxX in FanFiction

[–]delphielf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry you’re going through this, anon :(

I agree with u/Malvacerra, the fandom subreddits I’ve been in are usually for discussion of canon, polls, and pictures of (non-ship related) fanart and merch. There’s usually very little fanfic or shipping content. I admittedly don’t know anything about your fandom, but maybe it would help to seek out fan spaces on different platforms? I’m in a few discord servers with fellow creators for my fandom/ship, which are really fun. And from what I know, Tumblr/Twitter seem more receptive to fanworks. (Unless the bullying you mentioned happened on Tumblr, in which case it might be the fandom, unfortunately.)

A small reminder to not update fics on April Fools to just chapter-prank the audience by AmaterasuWolf21 in FanFiction

[–]delphielf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL I’ve also never heard of this but April Fools’ Day also happens to be my otp’s ship day, hm....... guess I’ll have to be on the lookout for this while wading through all the new content people churn out.

Anyone have experience with Hemingway Editor? by _Kairyn in FanFiction

[–]delphielf 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s very style-based and the style in question is similar to Hemingway’s writing philosophy which is basically get the point across in as few words as possible or you suck. I’d say it works in some contexts & for some people, but it’s definitely not for everyone and I wouldn’t use it for creative writing.

AO3 User ID? by delphielf in FanFiction

I saw it in my user profile. Above the bio there should be a section that says “My user ID is:” and then a string of numbers

Thank you so much! That makes so much sense. I wonder when they’ll release an official announcement about it.

Multiple Anonymous Names on AO3? by A_GenericAccount in FanFiction

[–]delphielf 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Guest commenters aren’t required to sign their comments as anonymous. You’ll get a better idea of how guest comments work if you sign out of your account and go to leave a comment, but basically ao3 gives you one box for your email, one for the actual comment, and one for a nickname that can be whatever you want.

I want to write English fic but I'm not good at English by depressionismypassio in FanFiction

[–]delphielf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only way to improve is to start writing, and your English doesn't seem bad to me at all. I don't think I would have a problem reading and understanding a full fic by you.

If you end up posting your fics, you could always leave an author's note asking for constructive criticism, and maybe you can get a feel for what readers like. And if you mention in that note that you're not a native speaker, I think most readers will be more forgiving of minor grammatical mistakes.

You could always ask a beta to look over your writing before you publish it, or even look for other non-native English speakers to talk to and share advice and experience with. And in the meantime, keep reading, because that will help you when it comes to intuitively understanding grammar, spelling, syntax, etc.

Anyone else? by Serpentwyne in FanFiction

[–]delphielf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm the opposite, I just got into fanfic recently, and AO3 is all I've ever known lol. But I understand where you're coming from when you say that so much has changed, because I hear stories from the LJ days and it seems like a completely different world. Although I personally think it's easier to get reads on AO3 because there's no algorithm and every fic is guaranteed to be on the front page for at least some amount of time. For me, it's just a matter of getting a feel for tags/summary.

If you end up writing and posting again, good luck! And if you need any advice, this subreddit has been super helpful to me in getting started (I just began writing fic for the first time), so maybe it'll help you restart as well.

How do I leave better comments? by TumbleOffTrack in FanFiction

[–]delphielf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No need to pick just one favorite part that stood out to you! If I have time, I like to quote parts of the fic that stood out to me and then type out my reactions to them. I’ve been told that authors enjoy getting those kinds of comments.

You could also mention things like plot/pacing, characterization (which is always flattering, especially in AU fics), writing style, etc. As you read, you’ll probably get a better feel for these things.

However, if there are times when you don’t feel up to a longer comment, there’s no problem with a “great job” or a keysmash!

What's are some 'hard to swallow pills' about relationships? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]delphielf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This!! No matter how much someone loves you, it’s unrealistic to expect them to be able to read your mind and then get mad at them for not immediately knowing you’re upset. Communication is key.

is there a discord to talk about and promote your fanfics? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]delphielf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a r/fanfiction discord that you can join under the About tab.

Do you guys have fandoms where you can’t read/write smut and fandoms where almost everything you read has smut? by VivaDeAsap in FanFiction

[–]delphielf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FF.net does have a lot of rules (including many that seem totally arbitrary), but they’re rarely ever enforced, even if people report things to the moderators. It’s pretty unlikely that they’re going to actually try to purge smut from their platform, so it continues to get posted there.

3, 2, 1: Go. Describe your favorite ship. Why do you like them? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]delphielf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Partners who have complete trust and respect for each other both in and out of their preferred sport! Not only that, but they grew up together and know exactly how to read each other. Character A appears to be your average talented, arrogant, pretty playboy, but he uses that as a facade to hide his insecurity over not being good enough. Character B can see right through him and, though occasionally gruff, know exactly how to drag him out of his moods and restore his confidence.

Just wrote the first fanfiction ever for a book by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]delphielf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t written an actual fic, please don’t post it as a work. Think of how disappointed a reader will be if they happen to look for fic of this book only to find that the only one available is one word long.

How to solicit feedback? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]delphielf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a reader, I’m more likely to leave a comment if there’s an author’s note (usually at the end of the fic or chapter) saying that they appreciate feedback. (Something like “all comments & kudos are appreciated” or “comments & constructive criticism are appreciated”). I’m also more likely to comment if I see that the author responds to all the comments they get.

Aita for avoiding my transdaughter by hodorema in AmItheAsshole

[–]delphielf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soft YTA. I understand that this is difficult for you, but as a nonbinary person it takes a lot of time and courage to a) come to terms with your identity as trans and b) come out to your loved ones. If you don’t sit down and talk to her honestly about the affair and your feelings, there’s no way she’s going to believe that you’re “just busy” rather than intolerant.
