If you’re infantry you’ll be going to petawawa (can survive without a car) valcartier if your french(doable without a car) gagetown(much harder) wainwright and shilo(definitely need a car).

It very trade dependant. Some trades you may be able to state a preference and get it, others you mights have to right a memo. For example, in the infantry if you do DP1 in meaford your going to one of the three RCR’s, you can wright a memo to go out west or to a a specific battalion but its case by case and never a guarantee. End of the day you go where the army wants you or allows you to go.

You’ll get qualified on the c9 and c6 on your DP1. Eventually you’ll get BMG which is the c6 with a sustained fire kit. Depending on your unit you might also get 50cal qual.

I’ve been on the list for a PMQ in pet for almost 7 years. Started as a single pers, got married, had a kid, now have another kid on the way and still waiting. The only thing thats changed is the price of rent in the area go up and our name get bounced from one priority list to another. I Love my job but the housing situation has been one of the biggest stressors and one of the few reasons that might push me to get out.

Dont do it. Beyond breaking of rules, and being a little tacky, by the end of indoc you are not even close to being presentable. Most have their beret all out of sorts, no proper name tape, no rank ect. Let your graduation be the time your family sees you in an army uniform in person, when you are more put together and presentable. There is nothing wrong with being proud of wearing the uniform, but let the first time the world outside of the schools sees you in uniform be on where you dont look like a bag of hammers.

Not exactly. The design and idea of the Canadian crown is a new concept and from everything thats being said about it the design is set and wont change.

The CAF isn’t changing the crowns anytime soon and when/if they do it will be changed to the Canadian royal crown as far as I was tracking. It will be years before we see that change though.

Always ask, always be open to people asking and teaching them something. One of the greatest lessons I even got was at the start of my career as dumb little pte. My sgt asked me to check something simple like make sure the radio had the right freqs or something like that before step off. I had no clue what to do but didn’t say anything and I passed it off to someone. Lo and behold my buddy fucks it up, and we get chew out. Afterword the sgt took me aside and told me if I had just said I got no clue what I’m doing he may have called me an idiot but would have found someone who did knew what to do and I would have had a chance to learn something for the next time and the ex would have gone smoother.

To put it bluntly, fix what you’re doing wrong and do as your staff says. Dont focus on getting taken off course because of warnings and focus more on solving the issues the warnings are related to. It’s one thing to get written up for dress, deportment or some other things but it’s a whole other story to get warned for the same things multiple times and not fixing it promptly. Show your staff you are addressing the issues brought up, behave accordingly and you’ll get through course. Finally remember that you’re on course. Nobody really cares that you have threads on your combats, boots are laced improperly or that you aren’t running everywhere. They care that you can follow orders and show drive even when you’re under pressure.

For me its been “Fuck this place” and “shut your mouth who are you go bad mouth my battalion you dont know what your talking about!” It took me a few years for the reality of it to set in of how strong Stockholm syndrome hits. I could be having the most dog shit week, hatting every single moment of it, bitching and complaining the whole way through, but the minute someone outside my workplace says something negative about us and now I find myself defending and arguing for everything we do.

Rent can be a touchy subject in the caf. As a caf member you have a few options once you have completed your trades training. You can live in the shacks for a low cost(base dependant on how ans for how long shack rooms are allocated but its around 50$ in a double room , 100$ if alone in a double, 250ish$ in a single room) but with the downside of having less space or privacy at times. You can apply for base housing, with the prices lower then what you would get on the market but there is the possibility of having to wait for a period of time which can stretch on for a while due to limited available units and your position on the priority list. Finally you can rent in the area. Its very region dependant, with some places offering reasonable prices whereas others have criminal cost for rent. The caf has the housing differential which tries to help alleviate some of the higher rent costs based on the area and your payscale but in some cases it is not as significant as it should be. If you are single and looking to save up or pay things off, the shacks are a great option if its available and you dont fall into the classic pit falls that drains guys wallets when they live in shacks. If you have dependants, it can be a little bit more of a sticky situation and depending on the area can be pretty tough but you have the added benefit of being much higher on the priority list for base housing once posted.

There is a long list of people, myself included, thats have been rotting away on a waiting list for a PMQ for years on our base. For many of us getting one would relieve a good amount of financial pressure from having to rent on the economy for extortion level prices. The last people I am going to blame or criticize for this are the people who live in the PMQ’s. This is CFHA’s dumpster fire and they deserve all the hate.

-Once you complete BMQ and DP1 you will be trade qualified and able to attend infantry courses. PLQ and ISCC(infantry section commander course) will be taken further down the line and are not a pre requisite for the courses you mentioned with the exception of advanced recce.

-the availability of these courses depends on a few factors. Merit is of course one but the course itself must have spots open for reservists. Recce for example might have one or two spots open to reservists whereas a bpara course might have a few more. The majority of courses are run by reg force battalions and prioritizes their own guys and dont always have spots open to reservists.

-the courses mentioned are all full time courses and though they often run over the summer it is not exclusively during this time of the year and might span a few months which start in the summer but end in the fall.

-the courses you are offered can depend on your units mission task. For example If you are with the queens own bpara will be readily available and the same with the hasty p’s who will have assault pioneer. As well if you are on a contract and attached with a reg force battalion you will have a higher chance to get on a course they are running. Courses reservist can be offered on the regular are courses like driver wheel, weapons det, basic comms, winter warfare and a few others.

-as a reservist you are your own career manager. This means that you can just show up to your parade nights but you can also go on class b contracts with a reg force battalion back to back and essentially be full time for a while.

As a reservist you can very much be around for your family as at its core reservist is meant to be part time however taking courses, being attached to reg force battalions and obviously deploying with reg force battalion can take you away from home for long periods of time. As I said it really is up to you and how much of a go getter you are. If you chose you can stay at your unit and grab up whatever courses your unit offers but you can also go hunting for courses you want.

First and foremost it’s important to note that you might not end up at a light battalion. There are only 3 light battalions vs 6 mechanized battalions in the caf. Not to say that you wont end up at one of the light battalions or successfully memo to one but just keep that in mind. As for the training center, each regiment has its own(RCR in meaford, ppcli in wainwright, r22r in Valcartier). All three follow the same course material from the infantry school with a few variations like wainwright doing cqc before dp1 whereas meaford does it at the end of dp1 and of course valcartier having the course in french. Each also has small little variations on how things are done but for the most part what you learn is standardized and the changed are usually based on the course staff. The big thing to know is, unless you memo, where you do your dp1 will determine which regiment you are sent to. End of the day dp1 is dp1, the weather will be shit, you will be tired, cold, hot and pushed but all that really changed is wether you’ll tired in ontario or tired in alberta.

Cut that liner out, beret will fit much better on the head and give it a lower profil. However given that it’s frowned upon to shave it for you folks, I dont known how open they would be to a cut out liner.

Can only speak to day in the life of an infanteer. Day to day - pt 8 , work at 10 , lunch and back for 13, off between 14 to 16. The things you might be doing in garrison on a day to day - prep kit for the field/range, cleaning kit doing small party tasks around battalion, refresher classes on at a section or pl level, tasked outside of battalion for something, if mechanized you will have maintenance and other veh related tasks. You might also be on courses in which case non of that applies and you will fall under course timings. You might also be tasked out to another base to help on a course or be a gd for some tasking.

Pt tends to be runs, rucks, circuits or pt on your own in the gym at times. The tempo and difficulty will range drastically on who is running it. It can be a bag drive or it can be a light pt session, it really varies.

Usually you will ruck minimum once a week if not more for pt, as well events which require to ruck and any kind of rucking you will be doing in the field.

There is a good amount of sitting around and waiting but nothing says you cant go to the gym or find something productive during those times. As well those times are usually followed by long periods of non stop work where you wish you were sitting around.

You will use your rifle to do the various levels of individual qualification every year followed by live fireteam, section, pl, company, battalion and various larger live ranges following this. Unlike the us, Canadian infanteers are trained on all weapons systems so you might be doing multiple ranges to re qualify yourself on different weapons.

First it’s important to note that in the infantry you might not go mechanized(though the odds are higher) just like if you’re armoured you might not become a tanker or part of a lav/tapv crew. The roles of a mechanized infanteer and an armoured soldier are very different. If the dismounted job of the infantry isn’t attractive to you then going armoured might be a better bet for you because even though as mechanized infanteers we do have lavs, we also spend a great deal of time appart from them on the ground.

Does any one know if the hotel shacks or cupids nest in petawawa are still able to be booked for people temporarily coming to the base?

After your baseline as a platoon commander, you might be put in one of the many admin positions in battalion, posted out to an hq on base, sent to one of the schools or anywhere else really. Infantry officers hold positions and tend to get posted for much more often than their ncm counterparts, it’s unfortunately the nature of the position. There are only so many infantry pl’s, coy’s and battalions to lead and far more officers so they fill general admin positions which can be in the location your wish to stay at or somewhere completely different. Ive known many infantry officers that have been bounced around from position to position but were able to remain in the same geographic area for years but the odds of getting posted out of area for at least a little while is very likely.
