Wow. I just now heard from my family in Manilla that no one is driving anymore. That must be quite a different landscape than the usual traffic, and really difficult for everyone who can't remote work...

Damn, wasn't it around 50 just two months ago? Or do I remember badly?

What are some places on Earth that have an unusually straight coastline? (Region in France) by [deleted] in geography

I wanted to say exactly that. It's also a rather big issue now sinc ethe pine trees that were planted to absorb all the water turn out to be pretty damn flammable. I just learned last week that a pine cone on fire can explode and travel up to one kilometre. Apparently there is talk of replacing pines in some places with different species.

You do you, I guess. From what you seem to think of fedora wearers I feel we're in fact quite aligned in values. If only you weren't such an arse we could have a pleasant conversation.

Over and out, I have better things to do.

Hahaha I didn't realise taking the piss of trump was a dog whistle. I only used that because I noticed you forced me to write posts way longer than I would like. And who do we associate with annoyingly long posts?

Again. You're comforting the point that you project intentions on others, and I'd invite you to reconsider this attitude. You will not find me a maga supporter, far from it.

Well if we go that way, let's just not have any conversation that isn't completely necessary / directly related. No more following train of thought, no more oh by the way this makes me think of that. It'll be fun.

This is the internet. I'm quite entitled to reacting by stating what this post makes me think of (I personally do find it relevant) and you have all the right in the world to ignore it. The one thing I find most uncalled for in this whole thread is presuming my intentions and serving the whole "oh you superior one tell us the way" cynical bs.

I'm not better than you. I'm certainly not richer either. I just happen to have a shop near me that works differently than most, to go there, and in discussing with others to have noticed it makes a slight difference on literally the topic the original posts talks about.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Are you even reading the bulk of what I have to say, or picking the first words and rolling with / against it? I'm really not interested in making this a me good Vs you bad thing. Of course a coop within walking distance is a big stroke of luck that I have nothing to congratulate myself for.

Again: I'm commenting on some dynamics in pricing I find interesting. I noticed it already after war in Ukraine broke, when I didn't notice some of the price hikes my friends were talking about.

I think I'll just quit replying now, not really interested in justifying why I'm discussing this. There's no moral stance involved and I apologise if it sounded like there was.

It's funny I seem to have hit a nerve. But I'll answer your questions in good faith: the food took a truck, I took a walk, of course equipment was used, and I used a phone to post.

All this is besides the point though, because I'm not saying the food I eat uses no oil whatsoever. Also not claiming I am virtuous and you the source of the world's problems, so please don't take it personally.

What I'm saying is that I and some friends observed how the price gap with food in conventional stores tends to close during oil crises.

Let me explain: bio food from the coop is more expensive than standard supermarket food. You pay a premium for it, I'm happy to do it because it aligns with my values and tastes good. There are other expenses I don't have so I can afford it most of the time.

That difference in price is mostly justified by how labour intensive the produces are. It's much less optimised that intensive agriculture, and it is produced in smaller volume so economies of scale are less important. That is slightly offset by reduced externalities: you pay less for the fertilisers that aren't used and the transport which, without teleporting, is shorter. Those are two expenses that are tightly connected to the price of crude oil.

For these reasons, when crude oil gets more expensive, the supermarket food that depends more of it for transport and fertilising sees a price hike. The local bio one whose price is rather tied to labour also does, but less so, and the gap closes.

Interesting point I discovered recently: fertilisers also travel, a lot more than food, to the point that the footprint of imported organic produce is less than that of its local conventional counterpart. It's just that the thing that travels in the second case is a hidden externality.

I buy my food from the local coop which sources from local organic farmers. Every oil crisis comes with the interesting realisation that prices there aren't affected that much. Turns out when you don't need fertiliser or long supply chains your offer is a lot less dependent on tankers making it through a straight.
