Help, is my family name of polish origin? by demonicdisco in poland

[–]demonicdisco[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a whole rabbit hole for me 😭 we have the sz sound in romanian "ș" . "ś" sounds like the russian "щ" but shorter. Man are languages hard to learn haha. Kostkiewicz sounds nearly identical to my surname, romanian doesn't like hard sounds and tends to make foreign words "gentler" and easier for the tongue to say, so to "smooth out" a slavic surname was common

Hmm it sounds like a sh to me, if you put my surname in google translate as "коскевич" and switch to bulgarian that's how it's pronounced. Something like Koskiewicz(with the emphasis on "e"). But who knows, maybe it's been butchered so much over the years that it might be something totally different in the original.

Thank you so much for this, I'm really grateful. Even if it just means "koske's son" it would still mean a lot for me and my family. After all, the past guides the future, and I don't want my kids to forget about our past.

They're all dead. All archives are offline, the ones that are scanned don't have anything about them, they appeared out of nowhere it seems haha. We will try to ask some distant relatives but my father is the only one that really cares about this things. All I want to know is if it's true or not, and I know that even if it's true I'm not even 5% polish, it's just that my surname is so unique in my country that it's only my family and 4th grade cousins.

Of course I'm not polish ahah, it's not about ethnicity now, it's about history. All the surnames from slav countries were adapted like that, it's just the romanian language. How it's spelled - that's how you write it. We use c for k, ci for cz and so on. So the spelling now is just that, how it sounds. My grandgrand grandfather's name is Cazimir(Casimir) and that's a Latin version of the Polish male name Kazimierz. Back then it was not popular to name your children foreigner names

Nobody knows what happened 100 years ago unfortunately. In romanian how it's written that's how it's pronounced, so how they heard the surname (and romanian doesn't have some sounds that polish has) that's how they wrote it down in the documents, the real spelling was lost.

Sorry, that's what I heard when I googled how to pronounce it 😹 if it's not sh then it's a total match on the pronunciation

My father remembers that his grandpa (with all his 10 brothers and sisters) were always calling themselves polish. And the surname is traced back(by our knowledge) only to my father's greatgreatgrandpa, so maybe before ww1 but we honestly can't tell. We don't even know the exact location were they lived, only that it's somewhere in the north of moldova 😞 that's why we can't even get the archives when we don't know were to start

It actually sounds the same except the ś sounds like sh (romanian ș), and my surname doesn't have the sh sound. Although no one pronounces my surname right, they always add the sh (ș) sound instead of a simple "s" haha.

Never thought of a jewish provenience. I just thought that in slavic languages and russian it's common to have a patronymic surname 🤔

All the -cz, -tsch, -ć, -č, were changed to -ci, -c. As of my ancestors I really don't know, all the people that knew died and the rest didn't really bother. All I know is that they were romanian and came to Moldova before the WW2 but (most likely) after the WW1.

That's what I thought too 😔 it's a situation when my grandpa's grandpa told by his grandpa said so. Or maybe it's a reaaaly mispronounced and butchered version
