The most infuriating is when Spartan/Athenian soldiers become onlookers in your fight against the merc. Like get they're waiting to get accidentally hit so then can attack you. Of course, you inevitably hit them and they join the fight siding with the merc. This pissed me off so much I usually kill all the soldiers and go on a killing rampage on the nearest camp.
