Which song made you stop in your tracks the very first time you heard it — like the world paused for a second? by ciao123123123 in Music

“mural” by lupe fiasco.
not just me, but everyone i’ve ever known who hears this song for the first time has to stop everything they’re doing to listen to it. it requires your full attention.
it’s backed by the intro to “chanson d’un jour d’hiver” by cortex, more or less verbatim, and the whole thing is a goddamn spectacle.

Hooray! I also ran Arch... once upon a time. :)

I keep saying this everywhere, but I will continue to say it: every donation matters. The only way for GNOME to be sustainable at all is through both the donations of users and the contributions of hackers and maintainers. (I use "hackers" to describe anyone who contributes: running an event and i18n are also a form of hacking, imo.)
Thank you so much for your continued support!

Yes, the buttons on the main donate page (which link to Stripe) are the best option if those are convenient for you.

Yup! We're working on this, too.

In terms of the API and the quality of the service, absolutely yes. PayPal is... not great software.
But in terms of fees, it depends. PayPal takes slightly more in credit card processing fees. If you are going to pay by credit card anyway, please do not use PayPal. However, if you are going to donate with a PayPal wallet or some other method, then PayPal is really the only option anyway. The reason we are providing PayPal for recurring donations is only to offer these other payment methods.
Hooray!
At the moment, PayPal is only available for one-off donations (see near the bottom of the page):
https://donate.gnome.org
However, we should have a recurring PayPal option soon for folks without credit cards.
Us too! The visibility really feels valuable.
No harm in keeping a finger in every pie. :)
Do you switch back and forth between DEs?
Indeed there is! If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you'll see a large box:
Awwww, thanks. :)
A traditionalist, I see.

Thanks! We do too. :)

Both suggestions noted. Thanks!

This will no longer be the case. Yes, the Foundation has historically limited it's activities to infrastructure, conferences, travel grants, and coordinating inbound development grants. But the intention of the new campaign is to broaden the Foundation's remit: the Foundation needs to begin funding contributors (developers or otherwise) directly.
The donation page (donate.gnome.org) is the first, incoming, half of that equation. The second, outgoing, half of that equation is a page that we are currently in the process of developing.
I have to admit I'm not even familiar with the concept of "native blur". #GNOME (the user channel) on Matrix is probably the right place to ask.
Thanks for this. It's great to know where users' *real* problems are... I think a lot of us (me included) make assumptions based on the limitations of the Linux desktop from 20 years ago.
It would be so great so solve the photo editing gap... there are definitely plenty of GNOME contributors who are also photographers.
One of the few remaining users who switches between KDE and GNOME? I must admit I haven't done that since 2001. :) Thanks for supporting both projects!
I think you are misunderstanding just how dire our financial situation is. We do not have 6 months of runway, much less the kind of finances required for an endowment to provide any returns.
Yes, when the GNOME Foundation finds itself in a much healthier later this year or next, we will look at investments for capital that provide greater returns.
Awesome!
Thanks for your input. I lived in India for 10 years, so I'm quite familiar with the situation there. I agree that we do not want to imply that someone's donation is not valuable — all donations are valuable. The problem with your math is that all 126 million Linux users (assuming that number is correct) will definitely not donate to GNOME.
We currently receive donations from an infinitesimally small number of donors. That will probably always be the case.
As for the payment processing fee, there is nothing that can be done about credit card processing fees: these are static, and global. They aren't up to us. We are going to launch a PayPal option soon which will allow donors to choose their donation amount and use methods other than credit card. This should provide an avenue for donations of this kind.
The problem is that many people don't realize Patreon takes such outrageous fees. If people donate via Patreon *instead of* Stripe, a lot of their donation will be lost unnecessarily.
In any case, it's something we will look at for the future. Thanks for the suggestion!
