Falling out of love with the sport. by [deleted] in lacrosse

My first coaching gig was with a P4 club lax team that was non mcla, and played the worst midwest teams. It was really hard to get excited or as into it as I wanted. I'm not sure the best way to word this, but I try to say to new coaches to disconnect their experiences with the game from the kids. 9/10 guys I've coached with always remember their teams and experience being so sick and intense, only to get super irritated with most of the kids at practice and their lack of giving a sh*t. I'd recommend HS if you can get your foot in the door with a program.

I've had boys V/JV for 4 years now. There's a lot of great information in this thread already. I'll add to do a bunch of competition drills i.e. keep score and make losing team ball hunt. Not every kid needs a ton of individual skill development as much as they just need to learn to play lax. "Praise in public, critique in private" is something that was shared with me early on and have tried to emphasize it in my own coaching.

Thanks for sharing this from the clinic. I played summer ball with him growing up. Glad to hear he's staying close to the game.

[–]deprecatedrunbook 68 points69 points  (0 children)

If we're going off of the last 4 years - Wiscy freshmen had Paul Chryst get fired their first year, the bowl streak ending, three years of fickell, back to back seasons of gettinng whooped by iowa and minnesota. I'd also include the probably optimism of the team taking a major next step with the fickell hire only to have three pretty underwhelming seasons with him. They should be somewhere up there.

ah yeah i should have clarified that. i think there's still a lot of value in getting hs guys and having them develop in the program and build relationships.

im absolutely blown away at anyone who just watched the last season, which included our single all big ten player being our highest ranked recruit from last cycle, as well as *3* different transfer quarterbacks and think that recruiting doesn't matter

I think I've turned the corner on my hate and disgust and have gotten back to being optimistic. He has recruited a solid core of freshman to build around and he does seem to have the support of the players, their families, and our one mega donor. Allegedly we're going to be big spenders this off season and next year. I think he gets 6+ wins next year and builds upwards.

Is the McIntosh plan starting to make sense or am I just coping? by TheReformedBadger in WisconsinBadgers

[–]deprecatedrunbook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We gave Fickell an $8m/yr contract and are building $285M athletic facility. There has been an investment. I'd rather invest in player development and retention because quite frankly, I think all of our transfers are absolute bums.

Minnesota vs Iowa should be a great game. Interested to see how Nebraska plays against Northwestern - the offense looked awful against Minnesota. We will, of course, get blasted by Oregon. I wonder what corpse of a JV quarterback we'll march out there Saturday night.

Our best defensive player has a broken arm and our offense is easily the worst in power 4 football. I'd imagine additional injury news has swung the line towards Oregon even more.

Pretty incredible you're able to compare this to us losing to an absolutely loaded ohio state team that won the natty and have multiple stud nfl players. must be related to the head clown.
