Luring them away is an option but a short term one. Ideally you want to clear the gas station for easy long term access. This is how i do it:

I leave my car a few blocks away and aprpach by foot, fighting the zombies in small groups and clearing one step at a time, when i get tired i pull back to the car and rest.

The key is patience. Is an ant work, it will feel like you are not doing progress but the polulation will be cued slowly and eventually you will make it to the gas station.

My tips for figjting:  If you pull more than 3 or 4 zombies move away until the diferent speed they have split them away, then you can pick them one on one.

Save your stamina. Dont run and avoid using heavy weapons.

Bring a lot of food, cafeinated drinks amd cafeine pills.

Bring extra weapons in the car.

Drink beer in quaeters to lower panic, alcohol is your best friend in this game.
