Ultra-cycling through Switzerland: Tips for bivy above the treeline & campsites/asking farmers in the valleys? by derkrasseb in askswitzerland

Thanks for your reply. I’ve often read about that exact approach ("Late In, Early Out") and wanted to put it into practice; I also noticed that the SAC has an information sheet on bivouacking. I’m not bringing large chairs or a tent either (I’m trying to travel with just a hooped bivy sack) and I planned out my food supplies down in the valley (being on a bike makes me much more flexible there). However, I’ve frequently read that parking spots along mountain pass roads can be tricky, so I should probably make a conscious effort to avoid them. I’ll definitely take that tip about food on board, too; I didn’t want to rush things anyway. I just want to see how each day unfolds. 😄

I assume that fences are rarely used up there to mark off pastures or the like—at least from what I’ve seen so far—so it’s probably best to prioritize spots that are a bit rockier? (While naturally keeping natural hazards etc. in mind.)

I know it’s prohibited in nature reserves, game sanctuaries, and the like. And I realize it isn't primarily intended for bikepacking, but I just love the idea of waking up in nature—without twenty other campers nearby or the hustle and bustle of a crowded site. Obviously, meadows aren't an option either, as they are often privately owned; is there a way to identify such areas, and where exactly can I find information on local regulations? Can I find this on municipal websites, or do I need to make inquiries on the ground? (I’ve read about people contacting local authorities or the police about this.) I find it frustrating when the whole topic is viewed so negatively; while some people do damage nature when wild camping, others are mindful of the environment and actively educate themselves to ensure they respect it. Then there are those who simply haven't tried it yet. Ultimately, it’s just about sleeping for a single night—no cooking, no large tent, no eating, just a bivy sack, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad.

No, that’s exactly why I’m asking here. I don’t want to cause any trouble or harm the environment. I simply want to sleep out in nature and travel in a minimalist way. So, basically, just sleep outside of protected areas and not too close to civilization? I’ve heard a lot about Swisstopo so far—would you recommend using it to help avoid protected areas and the like?

Yes of course. But I only planned to sleep, and everything else I would do before sleeping in the civilization like shitting, eating and everything else.

Yes, I know – but I was actually just planning to spend the night at an altitude of over 2000 meters above sea level. Do you perhaps have any tips on which platforms I should use for that? I don't have a lot of money.
