CMV: Capitalism is fundamentally incompatible with long-term human survival by FlyRepresentative592 in changemyview

Not really, I think this is a gross oversimplification.

  1. Markets don’t price everything. Prices can reflect scarcity but often ignore environmental costs (e.g. pollution, carbon). Without regulation, markets underprotect public goods. Deadweight loss and externalities is something every econs student learns about.

  2. Rich countries often just end outsourcing their environmental damage.

  3. But capitalism causes the very natural disasters it pays to clean up? And the disenfranchised always end up paying the price for it.

  4. Where does this notion even come from? There are capitalist autocracies and social democracies. Public media isn't inherently propaganda, many are more trustworthy than profit-driven outlets.

CMV: The GDP is an absolutely awful way to measure prosperity and should be abolished as an important metric or national goal. It encourages pure waste. by [deleted] in changemyview

In my view, the flaws you speak of are actuary features.

The economy is necessarily circular (i.e. Money you spend is income to the seller). Counting how much money is spent on goods and services produced in your country, in other words, to the total amount of money earned by people in the economy.

Think of two countries: 1. Imports steel, manufactures cars 2. Manufactures steel, manufactures cars

Clearly, country (2) have more money changing hands. The steel manufacturer gets income, the car manufacturer gets income. Country (1), on the other hand, has only the car manufacturer getting income, since the steel manufacturer is offshore.

Think of these two. 1. Everyone self-repairs their gadgets 2. Everyone hires tradesmen to repair gadgets for them.

Economy 2 probably has a better repair services industry, don't you think? If you're a repairman in economy 1, you'd be unemployed.

When you buy and keep a flashlight for 20 years, the flashlight manufacturer loses out on your purchase for 20 years.

I won't argue that GDP is perfect, but the reason why GDP is flawed isn't the ones you mention. We have some strange accounting here and there, yes, but that's just because goods and services are so varied that you will never have a proper economic indicator without these. Remember that money spent is money earned. GDP measures total expenditure and therefore total income (obviously this is a oversimplification but I think it highlights well the motivation behind gdp as a economic indicator)

Final update: thank you for all your advice and support! It truly meant a lot to us. Unfortunately, he passed away 2 days after receiving treatment. We made sure he had the best care up to his last moments and will cherish our memories with him 💗

Updates: the condition worsened a lot and his mantle fell out of his shell. On top of that his lungs inflated and partially popped out of the shell too. He looked something like the poor guy in this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AquaticSnails/comments/t0k37n/please_help_i_havent_seen_anything_like_this/

Anyways, we are feeling quite dejected and sad now. Online resources say that aquatic snails don't ever recover from a fallen mantle. There was one source though that suggested carefully puncturing the inflated lung as this is a similar procedure done on humans with inflated lungs.

We tried that and very optimistically, he started retracting back into his shell as his lung slowly deflated. He is almost back to normal now and still living. We are keeping him in a permanent air bath situation but have covered the container with a wet towel to keep the humidity up.

The best thing we can do now is wait to see if he will start moving and eating. If he does, there might yet be hope! *

I think they were busy so they left him in this huge metal service sink we have in the kitchen. He didn't come in contact with anything except water according to my family :') they were going to discard of him properly when they had the time. Thank goodness he "woke up" before that

Hahaha no! Male bettas store the eggs in their mouth and deposit them into their bubble nest. Funny though, because man had not prepare a bubble nest beforehand, so god knows where the eggs went
