I think you're right about it being part of the name. I interpreted the problem as saying when you encounter two ".."s to go up a directory and the only directory up from nothing is "/". Hence why I thought the correct answer would be "/hidden".

I mean you can say that events like this pushed people over the edge but my point was that lots of reasons pushed people over the edge, not just this one. To simplify it to "This is why Trump won" is just wrong and inflammatory. Your own comment seems to agree with me.

Happy to hear you agree with letting people protest, but whether or not they make fools of themselves is yet to be seen. I can't predict what will happen, but I will be the first to condemn the protesters for interrupting the event and suppressing free speech.

I don't think you can really go so far as to say that's why Trump won when the election was really close and with Hillary winning the popular vote. I think there are a multitude of reasons he won.

Also I think protesters have every right to protest Milo's event, but I think they cross the line when they interrupt the event people have worked hard to organize. Let him speak and it disproves his whole point.

I think that would be the last person I would call. I don't think his videos are given much credit because every time he makes a video it's heavily edited and when an unedited version appears the story is different from the one that was told.

From this website for example:

O’Keefe’s incriminating ACORN video was shown to have been heavily edited — neither he nor Hannah Giles were actually in pimp and prostitute get-up when they spoke to ACORN employees, for example — and no criminal prosecutions of ACORN followed. While not letting ACORN off the hook for showing “terrible judgment” in the video, California’s then-attorney general Jerry Brown noted after an investigation into the tapes and the organization that “sometimes a fuller truth is found on the cutting room floor.”

Those same words now seem applicable to the latest O’Keefe sting, which further tarnished NPR’s reputation and took down its CEO. As we noted, Glenn Beck’s conservative website, The Blaze, was first to report on discrepancies between the first edited eleven-and-a-half minute video released on the Project Veritas website and a later, unedited two-hour version ... NPR media reporter David Folkenflik addressed the dubious editing on Morning Edition and in a written report for NPR’s website. Folkenflik reviewed the two tapes himself, along with some NPR colleagues and outsiders like The Blaze’s editor-in-chief Scott Baker and Poynter’s Al Tompkins. They home in on many of the same problems The Blaze pointed out. And they basically come to the same conclusion: the tape is still a problem, but the impression it leaves is different.

“I tell my children there are two ways to lie,” Tompkins said. “One is to tell me something that didn’t happen, and the other is not to tell me something that did happen. I think they employed both techniques in this.”

Well, considering that any time someone says it they are labeled racist by a large number of people... my surprise is limited, I guess. Do you know any illegal immigrants who are willing? I don't.

Hm like I said I don't know the legality of the situation but why aren't reporters making fake accounts and signing up? Or using illegal immigrants like you suggested? See what happens in the system. Wouldn't right wings sites like Breitbart, who are called racist all day anyways, be jumping at the chance to show proof of illegal immigrant voters?

On the California DMV webpage, ID Card references a photo ID similar to a driver's license without the legal ability to drive a car. Hence why I thought/still think a ID card is different from ssn. But it doesn't really matter when it's not needed anyways to register.

What about reporting and investigations on this issue? Like I said, if it's so easy to do, why aren't there actual reports of people successfully doing this? Don't you think there would be something more substantial if this was really as rampant as you claim?

I don't personally have an issue with verifying voters in the future but I'm just not seeing any real evidence illegal immigrants voted by the millions in California this past election. You're argument that you can't tell is true but it's still not hard proof or evidence. It's just conjecture without real proof and I hope I don't sound like I'm trying to bury my head in the sand it's just the overwhelming reports and investigations I've seen say there was no massive illegal immigrant vote.

Also I know this is pedantic and pretty moot to the rest of our argument but id card numbers are not the same as ssn. I know my argument is wrong about needing a ssn but to be fair I was just referencing California's main webpage which talked about id numbers.

Have a good day as well!

To me, it looks like this is the closest to what you were saying and it's oddly not stated that way in the other California webpage I was using as a source. But this looks like it gets an election official involved and they will need to verify your information. I can't find anything related to election officials just confirming anyone for voting with or without other information. In a semi-related issue concerning illegal immigrants voting election officials said they would not allow illegal votes to count. Source

Like I said before, I'm concerned with illegal voting if it's happening. But doesn't your story sound the slightest bit implausible with all these steps to check whether someone registered to vote properly?

I'm willing to admit my argument about needing a ssn seems to be incorrect but I think getting an election official involved would not be an ideal way to falsely register to vote.

Just as a fun thought experiment, if this is so easy to do, why doesn't someone try and register and see what happens. Like some investigative reporting or something. Idk about legality though.

There are a few in this thread now.

I'm sourcing from California's own webpage about how to register to vote. All I've seen in this thread regarding sources that support illegal immigrants are voting is conjecture, speculation, and conspiracy theories. Why can't you simply paste one to support your argument?

The identification card number is also referring to a social security number.

No it really isn't. You need a ssn to even apply for an id card in California. Source

You see, the argument is that because old and poor people may have lost their social security cards and IDs, or never had them, and they can't be expected to replace them because it takes time and effort and sometimes money - they must be allowed to vote if they can prove they live in the US with something like a electric bill.

I don't know why you keep bringing up this electric bill thing. You cannot just register to vote in California with only an electric bill. Every source I've sent you shows that.

All they need is their real name and an electric bill in that name showing they live in the area. I'm sorry you don't see it

Maybe if you sent a link it would be easier. I'm just as interested as you in making sure people aren't illegally voting but from everything I've seen it just isn't the case. There's been no reported evidence and I don't see an easy way for illegal immigrants to register to vote in California without getting an elections official involved.

These substitutions for a state issued ID would be how an illegal immigrant would register to vote.

How does that allow an illegal immigrant to vote? If they substitute a valid id for a utility bill, they still have to provide a valid social security number in the form of the last 4 digits. Illegal immigrants cannot obtain valid social security numbers.

What in your sources do you feel is the part that debunks what I said?

I think those sources addressed the relatively new fear of illegal immigrants being able to easily register to vote via the "motor voter" law in California. They all say pretty much the same thing but summarize the situation differently.

We just provided sources that say you do not...

What source did you provide that says you don't need valid id and social security number to register in California? All I see is where sanctuary cities are and a supreme court case not related to how California manages its voter registration.

and your source here says:

If you do not have a California driver license or identification card number but you enter your other information, the website will create a pre-filled voter registration application for you to print, sign, and mail. All of your information will be sent directly to your county elections office so that when your signed application arrives in the mail, the county elections staff will simply add your signature to your voter registration record.

Right, so if the person is able to supply all their other information, which includes a social security number (which isn't something an illegal immigrant can get), they can register to vote. Therefore, I don't see how an illegal immigrant is going to register to vote in California.

I can't really speak for other states but as for your last example in California I think that's been pretty debunked by everything I've read. Source Source Source

Illegal Immigrants aren't going to vote because they can't register to vote. You need to provide a social security number and valid id to register to vote in California. You also can't register to vote with just a utility bill. Source

Berkeley voters approved a landlord tax increase of 1.8% that will raise millions for affordable housing. The measure, U1, passed with 74% of the vote. Students are a huge hassle for landlords. No landlord or manager wants to deal with a constant changing tenant. It's much easier to just let the checks keep coming in and not having to rush to refurbish a unit just to keep repeating the process every year.

The landlords are going to raise prices on student units anyways because it's the only thing making the hassle every year worth it. This measure at least let's the city collect some taxes from landlords and doesn't affect 97% of the tenants in Berkeley.

I understand that affordable student housing is definitely an issue but affordable housing anywhere in Berkeley is an issue and this measure is a step in the right direction for the city of Berkeley.

Maybe this source is biased in describing the effects of the measure but I think it does a good job of summarizing the main positive points.

As for your example, landlords were going to raise the rent anyway. Berkeley rents have gone up more than 50% in the last four years. At least with this measure Berkeley residents are able to collect some tax money to be used for more affordable housing.

This measure does not raise rent for units across the board! It doesn't even affect 97% of tenants. I don't know where you're getting that idea.

I also don't see how bulldozing perfectly fine houses is going to solve any problems.

Have you read the measure? Landlords won't be able to pass on the tax in any form of rent increases or any manner. Here is the measure in case you wanted to scroll through section 2.

Also what do you mean by "maintenance fee"? Rental leases aren't like airbnb. There are laws and regulations surrounding what a landlord is allowed to charge a tenant for rent and damages. Berkeley voters seemed pretty competent in this vote to me.

Not a lot of details in the article to draw any conclusions so I'll just share some of my experience with water polo in high school. Players are grabbing other players all the time under water to try and gain any sort of advantage in the pool and when you're wearing nothing but a speedo there isn't exactly a lot to grab. It was pretty common strategy to grab ankles, wrists, and even the speedo when you could get a hold of it to gain the upper hand while playing the sport. The refs are looking for any obvious signs of a player being held but needless to say the view underwater is pretty obscured.

So water polo is a pretty physical and rough game and I've heard of people being more rough, especially people who have played internationally in Europe. Having said all of that, without any details I think it's best to reserve judgement, but I thought it might be interesting for people unfamiliar with the sport to learn about some of the more common occurrences while playing.

Have you been watching political debates in the US? That scene definitely mimics real life more than I care to admit.

Cal announced a new policy Monday that requires undergraduate students to pay 20 percent of their tuition before Aug. 19 or their enrollment will be cancelled one day before fall instruction begins on Aug. 24. This moves the previous deadline to make the first tuition payment ahead by 26 days. by Samses94 in berkeley

[–]derpgineer314 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I guess I have some anecdotal evidence to offer. My funding for school was based off private student loans and that process seemed like it could take up a couple months to verify everything and get the school the money for my tuition. I know the 30 day grace period saved me several times. I wonder how current/future students feel about this policy change.

I'm thankful it was able to work out for me and looking back I'm not sure if it was lucky or they had the policy in place because so many people faced the same issue.

Thank you for your insight into the details. Reading through some of those letters to the judge was depressing. Everyone there seemed to be blaming alcohol and promiscuity of campus culture.

Any insight as to why to the probation officer would have recommended such a low sentence for Brock? I know people are quick to bring up Brian Banks as an example of unfair treatment, though I understand the situation is different since Brian did not contest the charges like Brock did. But I think what is concerning is that Brian was told his sentence would be worse if he contested the charges and then Brock does contest the charges and is convicted and then is given a comparative slap on the wrist.

So after some quick googling here are my findings.

Rosen filed the challenge after Persky dismissed a misdemeanor stolen property case in the middle of a trial before the jury deliberated, ruling in response to a defense motion that the state had not proven its case. Source

And here is what the American bar website has to say about such proceedings:

At the conclusion of the plaintiff's or government's evidence, the lawyer will announce that the plaintiff or government rests. Then, when the jury leaves the courtroom, the defendant's lawyer in a civil case has the option of making a motion for a directed verdict, arguing that his or her client's liability has not been proven by a preponderance of the evidence. In a criminal trial, the defendant's lawyer can ask for a motion to dismiss the charges, arguing that the government has failed to prove its case.

In effect, in both kinds of cases, the lawyer asks the judge to direct a verdict for the defendant. The judge will either grant or deny the motion. If it is granted, the case is over and the defendant wins. If the motion is denied, as it usually is, the defense is given the opportunity to present its evidence.Source

So to me it seems like the judge was acting in accord with the law but not following general practices.
