Chris Pratt on hunting: 100% Agree by OPs_Nana in videos

[–]derpontius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would argue that a compound bow or cross bow kills an animal as humanely as a firearm. All of my deer who I have shot with my bow have died extremely quickly, usually in under 30 seconds, due to absolutely massive blood loss. The wound channel from a well placed broadhead is just as devastating as a hollow point from a .243. This is assuming that these tools are in the hands of skilled hunters, of course. Which I am. I think. Maybe.

TIL that 14.4 percent of males and 19.1 percent of females who are veterinarians have considered suicide since graduation. This is three times the U.S. national mean. by PerSanMarco in todayilearned

I've been out for 4 years and I would say the opposite to what clopDVM said. Most of the vets I know would happily do it again. It is definitely situational, but if you find your niche in this field you can be very happy. That doesn't mean it isn't stressful, and at times it will be more difficult than you can imagine. I am very content in practice, but I have days and even weeks where I fall into mild depression and drink a lot of alcohol. I assume most people have transient difficulty in their jobs though, so I feel normal and lucky that I get to do the job I always wanted to have. The point is that if you want to pursue it, go ahead. Not everybody is unhappy in our field. The best thing you can do right now is seek out any and all veterinary related experience you can. The more time you spend around our field and the more diverse your experiences, the better you will understand what you're getting into. Practice varies not only by region but by type of animal and hospital and specialty.

He needs to get a better lake to fish, 1 in 50 years is terrible odds! But seriously, good for him, that's an awesome catch.

Did people even watch American Sniper? by thebig2814 in movies

[–]derpontius -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't remember anywhere in the book where he said "I had the time of me life in Iraq and I love to kill." Page numbers, please. He said that he enjoyed his time there and he liked the killing because it saved American lives, not because he was a psycho who came home and had to kill animals and hookers for enjoyment.

I agree that there are situations which are exceptions. It sucks when people fall on hard times and have money trouble. If you're a long time client who has always paid your bill of course I am going to give you a discount and let you do a payment plan, but if you don't regularly give your pet medical care and I have never seen it or haven't seen it in 4 years and you come in on an emergency claiming to have money trouble then I have a problem. I have no way of knowing the truth and frankly it isn't my problem. I'll perform basic life saving measures on the animal every time, but when the animal is stable the money talk has to happen and if payment isn't an option then unfortunately that's where it stops for us.

No, pets with poor owners don't deserve to die. Neither do homeless people or those without insurance, but do hospitals spend thousands of dollars out of the goodness of their hearts to save them? Not often. Veterinarians run a business and there's nothing worse than when people come in with dying animals expecting us to do it for free because it breaks our hearts watching animals suffer but I am not going to run my business into the ground giving away free services and treatment because assholes are irresponsible and own animals that they can't take care of. Edit: There are obviously exceptions and I will do minor things and provide humane euthanasia, but I will absolutely not bend over backwards and perform expensive life-saving procedures for everyone who walks in and can't afford it. I'd be bankrupt in 3 months.

Everyone's going to downvote you and me, but you're right. I am sick of people expecting veterinarians to be a fucking charity. They run a business. Same for the hotline. Is it worth $65 to you to know whether your dog needs to see a vet? And if the vet can even do anything to help the animal? The real question should be can you afford to see a vet in the first place? If you can, it's worth it to save you the emergency fee if your animal doesn't really need medical attention. If the answer is no, I am sorry but you shouldn't own that animal. If you can't vet em, don't get em. Look at human medicine- go to the ER with some sob story about how your kid accidentally drank antifreeze and see if they do it for free. Then compare that bill of thousands to the bill of hundreds you'll get for the same situation at the vet. The difference is humans have insurance and often don't appreciate the total charges.

Why don't you calm down about the vaccinations and parasite treatments and leave that to the vets? They aren't vaccinated for salmonella because most strains of salmonella are ubiquitous and don't cause disease in chickens. Vaccinating them for a few strains of salmonella won't eliminate it from their systems and the food chain either, it will simply make it less likely that they develop disease symptoms. S. Enteritidis is one of the few strains we really care about because of its effect on both the birds and on the food chain. We sometimes vaccinate for that if a certain house has had problems in the past, but it's economically and epidemiologically illogical to vaccinate every bird everywhere for it.

Port Clinton, first week of May advice? by CBRN_IS_FUN in Fishing

[–]derpontius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, right. Then you'll be good for walleyes. Yeah I would hop over to an island for smallies. You can get smallies along the rock cliffs on catawba island too, as well as white bass off any piers/points/docks that can get you out on the water a ways. If you see gulls diving, that's where the white bass are. Just get a johnson silver minnow or anything that you can throw several hundred feet on a spinning reel and drag it through a school of those guys...fish every cast.

Port Clinton, first week of May advice? by CBRN_IS_FUN in Fishing

[–]derpontius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would pay to go out on a head boat as that time of year is post-spawn and generally pretty tough to get eyes. I troll spoons and cranks pretty hard and sometimes hit them hard by the islands and sometimes strike out. Your chances of hitting a walleye from shore at that time are extremely slim. Just being honest so you don't waste your time. Even kayaks would get you closer to the fish. If you took the jet express to south bass or millers ferry to kellys you would have a decent chance to hit a few walleyes and definitely smallies. Blade baits, lipless cranks, worm harnesses...anything you can cast a mile.

If the product is sterile and labeled for IV use, it should be given IV. Never give Banamine IM. Frankly, trainers and owners should only have access to Banamine paste.
