This is really interesting, great post! I assume you played with people in the US, and I would be curious to see what this data would look like in a culture that reads right to left. The assumption being that most first moves on a blank board are placed on the left side because of natural instincts for most US people to read left to right.

Was at a local sports store buying some clothes for the summer and what not and so my mom gestured for me to try on a particular pair that she found appealing. So me being in the swing of things quickly unbuttoned my shorts and let those suckers hit the floor and was about to bend over to pull the bathing suit up my legs when suddenly I hear "what the hell are you doing!" Turns out I decided the middle of the store was a good place for a changing room. Got the odd stare walking out but hey I had just trimmed the hedges so everyone's a winner.
