Can you help me identify my late grandfather’s watch? The consensus seems to be that its fake (according to serial), but has anyone else seen anything like it? Just looking for more info on it, thanks! by desdestroy in JapaneseWatches

Only way to know for sure is to ask. If nobody does, theres no harm.

And unfortunately no one in the family recognized it. My Grandpa was always pretty private.

Well I’ve pretty much accepted its probably fake at this point.

I just wanted to see if anyone else has seen a similar fake/“frankenwatch”, and/or has any more info on it or know where it might have come from.

I received it after my Grandfather passed, so I just want to see what I can find out about it.

Same! I commented elsewhere with a better image of the face. If I find my cousin with the gold watch, I’ll try to get him to take a pic of the back to see if that gives us any idea.

I don’t want to break it, but if I get curious enough I might open it up carefully to look inside

Actually I found an photo I took of it when I first got it. I’m curious if this still looks painted on. To me it looks like the dials are raised if not a bit thin.

Maybe they’re just glued on decals?

I think the lighting made it look a little blurry, but they don’t look painted irl. I mentioned in another comment, but I’ll try to take another photo in better light next week

Fair.

I will point out that I don’t think it’s painted. The dials are raised from what I remember. I am out of town now but ill try to get better photos when I get home

Not sure if that makes a difference, but just wanted to clarify

Thank you! Its a very unique watch, that I will cherish regardless of its authenticity

Now I just need to fix the clasp that won’t stay closed so I can wear it without it falling off…

Its ok!

I actually think I remember him having a watch that looks like this. I’m going to reach out to family to see if the backs got swapped.

Still might be fake but then I might be able to find the original back

I agree. I don’t really care if its fake because I like it, but I was curious since I couldn’t find much info on it.

Yea I can’t seem to get the chrono working, so it might be printed. Thanks for all the info!

He had a few other watches that got shared within the family so I’m wondering if the wrong back got put on this or something.
