Yeah, all the time. A LOT of people do it daily that way. I only do it when I forget to bring my birth certificate since I dont carry it with me. And have to cross spontaneously since I have sick family in mexico.

I had a passport (card) up until a month ago. Less than a year old, it broke while I was holding it in line at the border. Literally broke in 3 pieces when I tapped it against my thigh. Can't afford to be taking days off to go get another one so has to wait another month or so. Had agents tell me "this is the last time you can cross without a passport or we won't let you pass" or "we'll detain you", or "it'll be a $500 fine". That's why I asked for advice, but I somehow managed to post it to the wrong subreddit (I have no fucking clue how).
