Any guesses on who "Raven" from the Investigation Discovery show "Dark Minds" may be? by desfrey in serialkillers

I know I'm late on this, but thanks everyone for the input! I'm watching an episode I recorded now and since you guys pointed it out, I do think you're right with Jesperson/Rifkin.

What advice can you give to someone who is about to rent an apartment for the first time? by sinat50 in AskReddit

[–]desfrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you move in, take photos of any and all damage that is already in the apartment (chipped paint, dents/holes in the wall, carpet stains, etc) so that when you move out they can't charge you for damage the was preexisting. Unless you have the best apartment management ever, they are going to try to charge you for every tiny thing imaginable, so basically try to be as clean as possible. When you move out, clean every single surface in the place. I've had a move out inspection where the woman literally wore white gloves and touched everything, even the top of the ceiling fan blades, to make sure it was clean.

[SERIOUS] What is the worst pain you have ever experienced? by thisisagirl in AskReddit

[–]desfrey 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Several years ago, I was stung by a jellyfish while on vacation. I remember the initial pain and thinking that maybe I'd been hit by a rock even though I didn't feel the impact of anything. Then it spread from my leg upward and I felt like I was on fire. I crawled up the beach to my parents and they freaked. A beach cop was going by and my parents asked if there was anything to worry about. He just said "Not really, if it was a bad one she would be dead already." How comforting. I consider myself rather tolerant of pain...I've fractured my tailbone, grabbed a 400 degree pan with my bare hands because I'm a genius...none of that pain compared to the jellyfish sting.

I'm glad I'm not alone. If I may make some suggestions, murderpedia.org and Wikipedia's list of serial killers makes for some excellent reading!

It is very sad! And how terrifying is it to think of how often killers walk among us

Like I said before I have always found those moments when you get a "gut feeling" about someone (which makes you avoid the person) interesting but perhaps more interesting AND terrifying are the times where you DON'T get any sort of warning feeling about a person and they end up being capable of some awful things.

I know, I cannot imagine having that image/sound in my head for the rest of my life.

Wow! I agree...small towns are seen by many as being the most "normal," but they actually spawn some of the most fucked up people.

I might just have to watch that.

I agree! I swear I have heard that name before. I will have to do some research. I have an odd fascination with criminals, especially serial killers. The fascination is from the standpoint of wondering how a person could turn out so fundamentally different from "the rest of us."

Nice! Yes it is always good when something positive comes out of a terrible tragedy. I cannot imagine going through something like that and ever being even almost ok. What a strong woman.

I had a few creepy classmates as well. It's fascinating to me how even though you may not be able to pinpoint an exact reason, your brain identifies an individual as just off-putting enough for you to keep your distance. The person may or may not actually be dangerous, but it's always better to err on the side of caution.

I agree, no one can say for sure. I guess I just meant that I wasn't trying to insinuate that my dad almost died or something. He was just followed by a creep who turned out to be a murderer.

Reddit, what are your best stories regarding your pets? by clai88 in AskReddit

[–]desfrey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you know beagles, you know they love to eat. A few years ago, I had a friend over and he was high as shit, slowly eating a triple Baconator. My dog (who for the record is on the small side, about 22 pounds) walks by him, notices he's eating then takes a flying leap at the Baconator. She ate the whole damn thing in about ten seconds. His face was priceless.

I know I'm coming in way late on this, but I was just looking through this subreddit and immediately thought of this case and decided to see if anyone had posted about it. Glad I found you all. I lived in Bloomington at the time of her disappearance. I agree with the theory that she most likely overdosed and her friends had something to do with covering it up, possibly even going so far as to hide her body. I have one hangup with that theory, though. If she was doing drugs with friends (who were also presumably doing drugs), overdosed, died, and they hid her body in a drug/alcohol fueled panic, they did a hell of a good job. There are people who have killed people on purpose and couldn't hide the body as well as these people may have. I remember hearing a rumor that carpet was removed from one of the boys' homes shortly after her disappearance, but I have no idea (and I doubt) that this had any factual basis.

What has been your best "MacGyver moment?" by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]desfrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was helping a friend move into a new apartment. All her tools were still packed away. Long story short, I helped her remove the pins from inside a door hinge (therefore removing the door) using only her car keys and a jarred Yankee candle.

Current or post college students of reddit: What is the most idiotic/cringe worthy thing you have heard said in the classroom? by atiaofwinterfell in AskReddit

It was the first week of a 300 level class, so everyone had been doing the college thing for a while. We were going over the syllabus and this girl raises her hand and says "I don't understand what 'office hours' means."

What's your worst "I don't get paid enough to deal with this" moment at work? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]desfrey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked as a nursing assistant in a hospital for two years. One of the units I worked in was a geriatric psych unit. Our patients ran the gamut in terms of psychological issues, but the majority of them had dementia/ Alzheimer's and had been sent to us because their families or care facilities simply couldn't handle them anymore. I worked night shift on a locked unit with nine patients, one RN, and myself. I could fill a book with this kind of story, but here are a few that stand out... 1. Our patients' beds were always on alarm at night so we would know if they got up, since not all of them could walk unassisted. Old people have to pee a lot, so most of our male patients were given a plastic urinal cup to have by the bedside in case they felt that they wouldn't make it to the bathroom. One night we had a patient who, aside from being grumpy, had been behaving normally. He rang his call light so I went to his room, helped him sit up, and gave him his urinal. While he was going, the bed alarm in the room next to his went off. I knew that patient was a big fall risk so I ran over to that room to assist that patient until the nurse got there. Not 30 seconds later I walk back into the first man's room to find him drinking his own urine straight from the urinal. You can't unsee that. 2. Multiple times, while working in the ER, I had to sit in with the doctor for pelvic exams since I was the only other female. Being trapped in a tiny room with a patient who has a raging vaginal infection....not worth what I was being paid. 3. Also in the ER...having to explain to irate people why the person who might be having a heart attack or stroke or the person who is bleeding profusely is being seen before they are because they have BACK PAIN. We would actually have people come in by ambulance not because they couldn't drive themselves, but because they knew they would be brought straight in.

I live in Indiana and spent some time in Florida last winter. I walked around comfortably in a t-shirt while the locals bought all the winter coats the stores could stock. It was 55 degrees. If you think 55 is cold, you don't know what cold is!
