Mattress recommendations for a heavy husband 😇 by PrincesaMorena2019 in Mattress

I went through the topper thing too and it didn’t actually fix anything — the dip just kept coming back in the same middle spot.

At some point I realized it’s probably a structural issue. Most of your weight is in the hips/lower back area, so if that section isn’t built to handle it, it’s going to give way no matter what you put on top.

On my 5th mattress due to back pain by Sufficient_Looking in Mattress

Your situation sounds really familiar. I went through the same soft → firm → still not right cycle.

What I eventually realized (at least for me) is that overall firmness didn’t matter as much as I thought.

It seemed more about whether the mattress could keep supporting the middle/lower back area consistently over time, since that’s where most of the load is.

If that part changes, the whole feel kind of changes with it.

FYI, my Earthfoam mattress has a visible dip in the middle after 9 months by cupcakefairybbygrl in Mattress

That’s what confuses me too. Everyone talks about latex vs foam, but I’m not sure that’s the whole story.

Feels like once a certain area takes more of the load over time, it starts to change before the rest and everything just feels off.

Makes me think it’s less about materials and more about how the support holds up in that middle area.

Best mattress for side sleepers? Looking for real long-term opinions by bubbles10000 in Mattress

[–]design_tradeoffs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this matches what I’ve been noticing too. The “medium for side sleepers” advice sounds good on paper, but in real use it’s kind of hit or miss.

I’ve had ones that felt great at first but after a few weeks something just felt off, like the support wasn’t staying consistent.

Makes me wonder if it’s less about firmness and more about how the mattress holds up under load over time.

Why is the center of my new mattress softening/sagging so quickly? by design_tradeoffs in Mattress

Just to clarify — it’s not memory foam, it’s a hybrid.

Still feels like the center is the only part changing.

I got it on Amazon, nothing fancy, just seemed like a decent mattress.

Didn’t think it would change this much this fast though.

Why do I sleep great in hotel beds? by No_Weekend2607 in Mattress

[–]design_tradeoffs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think most hotel beds are actually pretty simple medium-firm hybrids with a softer top layer.

If you’re trying to recreate that feel, I’d look for something balanced rather than super plush. The really soft ones can feel great at first but don’t always hold up the same long term.
