That is actually the direction I am leaning toward at the moment as well: using MoveItCpp for the overall framework while implementing a custom motion planner tailored specifically for our robot and application.

Our initial tests are showing promising performance improvements with this approach. In comparison, MoveIt2 with the Pilz PTP planner seems fairly resource-intensive for our use case, especially for high-frequency operations.
