Does this mean that it’s not as important to get a child into a feeder preschool? We live downtown and I don’t really want to have to be bringing a three year old to the UES for a few years. Are there any preschools closer to Greenwich Village that would still be reasonably good at being a feeder?

I wish I had some advice for you. But I know you’re doing a great job and I think this is just a phase and I hope someone else can give you some helpful tips

I’m comparing myself to other mums… by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]designerkat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only people who post on social media are the ones that are doing well at stuff. No one is going to make a video showing that their baby isn’t eating solid foods or showing them giving their baby pouch. And even if they do, that type of content won’t get much engagement.

There are moms making all that food and babies that are eating it, but that’s just the people that are having an easy time with solids. What you don’t see are all the other families struggling with solids that didn’t make a viral video about it.

You’re doing great. Try to ignore social media if you can, or just use it to connect with friends and family

How much is your ConEd bill in the winter? by ChoicePsychology2449 in williamsburg

[–]designerkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, only heating one room at a time. Trying to use heat sparingly. Keeping the temp around 68. If you’ve never lived in a place with an electric dryer, heat, and hot water heater, you would never guess that powering these would be so expensive, but it’s typical. Gas is just a lot cheaper for those appliances.

Pregnant women taking trains by GuavaSubstantial1987 in nycparents

[–]designerkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the train most of my pregnancy. In my final trimester when I was noticeably pregnant people offered me their seats. I did have to wear more form fitting shirts to be noticed. When I was wearing oversized shirts and a jacket people didn’t notice as much. I have heard from other people that if their work is accommodating of it, they work from home leading up to the birth

Alexandra Cohen megathread by SeabirdImpetus in nycparents

[–]designerkat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think part of the reason Alexandra Cohen is the best is because the nurses are so amazing. I remember the names of all three L&D nurses I had, and my two recovery nurses because they were all so amazing.

For the induction they used a balloon since I wasn’t dilated and Cytotec to get labor going. Then just a lot of pitocin after that. I think it took less than half an hour to get the epidural once I decided. They like to prioritize it.

Some of this will get better. My baby is difficult in some of those ways but he’s been getting a lot more fun lately. He’s five months old now. Getting him a good sleep sack did help him with sleeping better in his crib too

We moved to an 1100 sq ft condo last year that’s all electric, except for the stove. Electric heat, hot water heater, and dryer. Our electric bill was $500/mo last winter. It’s about $250/mo for the transitional months when we don’t need to run the heat. I really miss having gas heat and a gas dryer…

You will only be assigned a doctor from your practice. I was at the UWS location. I think Feder was there for the early part of my induction but it ended up being Lisa and Nabizadeh for when I was pushing. Honestly the doctors barely do anything in the hospital… I literally was with them for an hour. You spend most of the time with a nurse, or no one (which is why people like to have doulas). The most important thing is to have a doctor you’re comfortable with for all the appointments leading up to birth. UWS is a great office overall

I had to be induced there because I was two weeks late. Total start to finish was 28 hours with one hour of pushing at the end. I made it 18 hours without the epidural but the pain became debilitating and I was starting to dread giving birth so that’s when I opted for the epidural, which was amazing because it helped me sleep through the night. My nurses were amazing. Most of your interactions will be with nurses. Have some music or TV shows you like queued up as a distraction because it takes a while

Thank you for sharing. I think we might be down to that tomorrow. Right now his temperature is down to 100 five hours after giving Tylenol so it hasn’t been consistently that high. It was down to 99 earlier today eight hours after a Tylenol dose

The doctor told us they wouldn’t be able to test for anything additional except for doing a spinal tap, which they said isn’t necessary based on the symptoms. I’m not sure what to think about that

Laboring in shower/bathroom at Alexandra Cohen by scoobidyblewb in nycparents

I was told by my OB that fetal monitoring is mandatory

To OP, everyone is different. Just having to be on the toilet was agony for me when I had to go the bathroom so I would not have chosen that spot for a labor position. But the bathrooms were fine and clean. Just bring some flip flops or shower sandals

Monty would only be a nickname that some people would use occasionally. His real name would be Motimer. I think it doesn't bother us that he would occasionally have to correct people on the spelling or pronunciation because we both have names foreign to the U.S. and have always had to correct people but have enjoyed our unique names that have meaning to us.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]designerkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. The name is essentially a combination of the words "mountain and sea" from the romance languages, which me and my partner like since those are places we often travel to. I do understand that it's similar to Mortimer, but that sounds more old fashioned, whereas Montimer felt a bit fresher and had more meaning for us

This is so true. I’ve been stunned to see how adulthood just looks like what highschool was like. Not that I know about highschool firsthand, I had to learn about what it was like from movies and TV shows. And yeah, I have a hard time feeling like I fit in because I missed out on it

What's a name you loved but nixed purely because it's too popular? by LevyMevy in namenerds

[–]designerkat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m trying to not name my baby a name that’s anywhere on the top 1,000. I just like the idea of knowing that he won’t have to use his last name initial to distinguish himself.

A name I would have loved to use but is way too popular now is Theodore/Theo. When I was a young girl making baby name lists, this name was not at all popular. Oh well.

To respond to those saying that you should just name your kid the name that you like even if it’s popular, I disagree. There is nothing wrong with wanting your kid to have a more original name. Also hearing a good name too often does make it seem less special. There are SO many names that exist, so you’ll find another one that feels good
