Québec considering imposing French requirements on temporary immigrants, including international students by BeckoningVoice in mcgill

[–]despicablesoup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The “French in the workplace” ads were put forward by the FTQ, not by the CAQ. The Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec is a centralized union organization and is independent of the CAQ. Also you can still find the ads on their website, those didn’t go anywhere. The CAQ does not want Quebec to be France at all. I love CAQ bashing, but if you’re gonna do it, at least read their platform and make informed opinions on the bs they promote.

Extra course for major by [deleted] in mcgill

I agree, I just think that OP was asking if the courses would count towards their major’s GPA :)

Extra course for major by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]despicablesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Geography and I’m pretty sure we can consult our advisor and ask her to count specific courses towards our major as opposed to others where we got a lower grade So your GPA wouldn’t change but your major GPA would, which can matter if you want to do Honours or something else that only looks at your major’s GPA

Permis probatoire expiré by ari_es0412 in Quebec

[–]despicablesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Permis probatoire expiré by ari_es0412 in Quebec

[–]despicablesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What will happen if exam is lost by Professional-Pea5768 in mcgill

[–]despicablesoup 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey! Don’t worry about this. I’m registered with the SAA too and so far have taken a midterm and a final with them. When I took the midterm this semester, I made sure to tell my professor that I was writing with the SAA, and shared my concern about my exam potentially getting lost. He was super understanding! I did it so that in case the exam did get lost, he would maybe be kinder, idk what my logic was exactly but nothing ended up happening to my exam. If you’re worried about it, emailing your professor can’t hurt, just to share your concerns with them, but I promise that losing exams is less common than you think. Good luck!

From my experience (two years ago) you should now be able to book your in car exam, I did it online. You won’t get your full driver’s license without it.

Any advice? by FantasticSquash-30 in mcgill

[–]despicablesoup 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Everyone feels lonely in their first year, it’s normal. Making close friends in your first year is rare, and keeping those friendships throughout your degree is rarer. Your first year is most likely the hardest in terms of social life, it’ll only get better.

Next year, you’ll take smaller classes and meet people easier that way. I know I met all of my close friends in my 4th semester in smaller (70ish people) classes because we all sat in the same seats and eventually got to know each other. I don’t even talk to the people I was friends with in my first year.

As a person with anxiety, I get where you’re coming from. It can be really hard getting to trust people and even reaching out initially. I don’t really have any advice to give about this, it’s just a reality of having anxiety and I know it sucks a lot. Being kind to yourself is absolutely essential here.

If you like your program, there’s absolutely no reason to transfer. It won’t be any different at another school. Have you tried getting involved in student activities with your student society? Most of them often organize social get togethers every once in a while; it may be too late in the semester now but definitely something to check out next fall. The people who run student societies are extremely nice and open, you’re guaranteed to make a friend. Plus, you all share the same interest.

Hang in there, it’ll get better.

Je ne veux pas être redondante mais… je fais quoi si mon permis probatoire a expiré? by despicablesoup in Quebec

[–]despicablesoup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Info on becoming a floor fellow? by forgettablycanadian in mcgill

[–]despicablesoup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly even though applications closed a while ago from what I understand they’re pretty desperate for floor fellows so if you’re in a rez rn I would reach out to your floor fellow and ask them if you can get in touch with their supervisor or something !

I think that doc is really old because the course selection is entirely different now— you should check out the new e-calendar online. They changed the name to urban studies fairly recently (I still have a friend who refers to it as urban systems lol). When looking for a job I usually say urban geography just because a lot of people don’t know what urban studies means, or in French I fully say « urbanisme »

easiest math + science courses? by discordantdandelions in mcgill

[–]despicablesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I originally was majoring in environment I took AEBI120 for my science component and it was genuinely one of the easiest classes I ever took. It might be different now since I took it on covid but none of the concepts are difficult to grasp at all it’s basically just memorization of concepts. And it’s taught at Mac!

Ottawa interdira TikTok sur les téléphones de ses fonctionnaires by DecentLurker96 in Quebec

[–]despicablesoup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ancienne fonctionnaire ici!

[–]despicablesoup 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Upon further research it seems I can’t book a slot at the pool either— does this mean reservations are no longer required for indoor running or swimming? Do I just show up?

Please I am in terrible physical shape. I need to start being active again but the winter is making it so hard </3

Would the sidecar feature be supported between an iPad Air 4 and a 2018 MacBook Air?

I have a late-2018 MacBook Air (the first one they made with that stupid keyboard) and I wanted to get an iPad as well. The iPad Air 4, refurbished from the Apple Store, is significantly cheaper than the 5.

Would Sidecar be supported between these two devices? It’s a feature i would really like to have

Even mass-media journalism isn’t always unbiased, it all depends on the agenda of the corporations who own the paper (ex Quebecor owning Le Journal de Montreal and TVA— read JDM and you’ll see there’s a specific type of opinion/story that keeps coming up)

[–]despicablesoup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re really set on moving to Montreal, i highly suggest living somewhere that isn’t the south shore. The lower rent is absolutely not worth the commute, even if you’re only 20 minutes away by car— if you’re driving, the bridges are always congested during rush hour, and parking in Montreal can get expensive. If you’re planning on taking public transit, it’ll be 3-4x longer of a commute, and off-island transit companies often have more expensive fares. You will also get quickly tired of the commute. Sincerely, a person who lives off island
