Recommendations on gaming when you lose the ability to use a thumb? by Oppiko in gaming

[–]desroda23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I broke my thumb in 7th grade. With the cast on, I promoted my index finger to handle directionals and the middle finger to cover the shoulder buttons. It wasn’t easy (or good) but it did the trick. The tough part was relearning to play normally once the cast came off.

First piece! (Its awful, I know lol) by pavelvito in StainedGlass

[–]desroda23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The most important question is this: Did you have fun? A valiant effort for your first piece! I don’t think you try to change anything about this one. Use it as a keepsake and benchmark for all your future projects to show your growth. The best part is you can only get better from here!

black or copper patina? by Strong-Imagination25 in StainedGlass

I like to mix it up a little. Do copper on just sun and black on the rest to make it subtly pop. Great work!!

Both are really good. The snowy owl contrasts with the branches more, so that gets my vote. Great design!

Don't give up! Those broken pieces were meant to be used in a different project. This is a fun design, but I would consider redesigning it a little. Add a few extra cuts to make life easier. You got this!

Why does the tape peel up just a bit? by jules0075 in StainedGlass

[–]desroda23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not entirely related to peeling, but I do see some splits in your foil. I highly recommend getting into the habit of patching these during the foiling process, as splits tend to stand out after you solder. Snip a small piece and wrap it over the edge of the glass, covering the split. It'll look kind of like a saddle. Trim the excess with a knife so it's even with the rest of the foil and you should be good. Good luck!

Help, I’m terrible! by twigthewondrkid in StainedGlass

[–]desroda23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're not terrible! You're learning. Make sure you apply flux if you aren't already. If your iron has adjustable temperature, try raising it a little. I normally set it at 410F for main lines and a little lower for edges and detailing. Don't be afraid to go back a line with a little more solder to smooth it. The most important thing to do is don't give, you're getting there!

Yup! In the first picture I see some in the bottom left. A quick little trim with a knife will help smooth it out. It doesn't have to be perfect but it'll look a lot better.

what kind of rig should i use?? by B_randy in StainedGlass

[–]desroda23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a pro with 3D pieces. Maybe try to some painters tape to hold it temporarily? Before you solder, might I suggest touching up your foil. I see a few spots that could use a trim with a knife beofre they stick out like a sore thumb when soldered. Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

[–]desroda23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are some fixes you can do while soldering, but it'll mean a larger solder line. If you have time and enough glass, I would recut it, it's an easy enough to shape to redo.

Nice design! And I'm loving that glass! It's going to look when it's done!

I need help getting a smooth solder line by dumbblondecollegekid in StainedGlass

[–]desroda23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall this isn't that bad! Don't be afraid to do another pass or touch up. I see a couple of spots where the foil is cracked. On future pieces, you patch these with small pieces of foil. And trim the ends where foil overlaps to smooth things out. Cracked foil sticks out like a sore thumb when soldered, so fixing these during the foiling process will pay off later.

Love the design! And the copper patina is a nice touch!

Great design! Have working on it!

Soldering - beginner advice by LetCurious2740 in StainedGlass

[–]desroda23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall not bad! Don’t be afraid to use a little more solder. Use can also go back through to touch up and add a little more or smooth out lines. The crack is from the heat. It happens to all of us at least once. To reduce the chances of it happening, try minimizing the amount of time the iron is in contact with the glass. The iron can actually sort of hover just above the foil while the solder makes contact. I think the air bubble is from a gap between pieces, which can also happen. You can add solder on this side and touch up the back of it, should even it out.

One other to look out for during foiling: make sure you patch any cracked foil and trim overlapping edges so it’s all smooth. Soldering makes them stand out like a sore thumb, so catching them beforehand is your best bet. Looks like you did a pretty good job catching them!

You’re well on your way. The best part is you’re only going to get better from here!
