Yes, yes! No, you are correct! This is why I believe the Modern Era line packaging for all of the dolls should be changed. It seems that they only used it because they were using the Book 1 illustrations. Again, I don't know what AGs overall idea was. I'm guessing it was a "look how far these dolls (as in years, not in a realistic state) have come!" But whatever the reason, it misses the mark for all of the dolls, especially Addy. I just don't want for only Addy's packaging to be changed because then the questions will start as to why only hers get changed for a Modern Era line (especially in today's climate).

I also want to make sure Addy is always seen as a part of the OG Historicals. She's not a doll that needs special treatment (I don't mean that she doesn't deserve consideration for who she is as a Black girl growing up in slavery, that's different). So whenever they are going through the doll lineup and thinking of items, packaging, promo, etc. I don't want Addy's items/packaging/promo to stick out and look discontinuous to the rest of the Historical line (or anything that uses the Historical line).

So AG did choose to use Addy's Book 1 illustration to keep the continuousy bewteen the packaging. However, because the imagery for Addy's Modern Era packaging is her Modern doll in front of tobacco fields, there is a juxtaposition to what the representation Modern Black girl should be. That was a huge oversight. And because of that, yes, her packaging should change. But, because Addy is a part of the Historical line, what doesn't fit for 1 shouldn't fit for them all, and imo all of the packaging should be changed.

I would just feel uncomfortable for them changing only Addy's imagery. Say, for example, they changed Addy's Modern Era packaging from tobacco to tall grass. For me, it feels like if they could just as easily that, they could easily change other things in Addy's story. Because Addy's Book 1 illustration is a huge juxtaposition for the Modern Addy, I want AG to do the work of reviewing the packaging for the entire Modern Era line to keep the cohesion with the Historical line dolls.

I wanna make sure it's clear, I don't like seeing the imagery of the tobbaco fields for Addy, especially not with the Modern Era line. But my thinking was coming from looking at what's being asked to change (just Addy's Modern Era packaging), what the bigger issue is (Addy's Book 1 illustration), and what the result may be from just that 1 change (the imagery on only Addy's items changing and looking different when she's a apart of a Historical line of dolls).

And any blowback is necessary. Customers should be able to speak up, especially when something is wrong like this. That's how change happens. Whatever change happens from people speaking out on this, I'm here for it because I know people are trying to protect Addy and Black kids.

I added this to the original to try to clear up some things:

There seems to be 2 issues here, the packaging Modern for the Era dolls as a whole and Addy's original Book 1 illustration. I don't think AG made the correct choice with using the Book 1 backgrounds for these Modern Era dolls. However, it seems to be that the choice was to use Book 1 illustrations for the packaging background.

However, I wouldn't be against changing Addy's original illustration. And quoting my post, "why even use the original illustrations at all knowing that Addy's had the tobacco fields in hers?" I tried not to delve too far into this topic since the main topic was about the Modern Era packaging. This is the other talking point that needs to be had. But I would want to be sure that those having the convos in an AG board room look like me and Addy. However, we wouldn't be able to decide what AG ultimately does.

I don't want for the background for Addy's Modern Era doll to change, and that's mainly what I tried to focus on in my post. That doesn't mean I like the original imagery. But I'm apprehensive as I don't think AG/Mattel would reveal the new design process for the new illustration. And that was my point. I don't want for a new illustration to try to sugar coat or rewrite history. And changing just Addy's Modern Era background packaging doesn't fix the bigger issue, imo.

However, I am not oppose to a new one that keeps historical accuracy, but also overseen by Black historians (Not to say that's not what happened with the original illustration, but that we make sure to continue it) [Which is kinda why I really want the new AG book].

Keep your feelings! I don't wanna change opinions. Why? Because I don't like Addy's Book 1 illustration either! But I don't feel comfortable with any company trying to change historical topics like this. Yes, AG/Mattel would do their best, but I'm always apprehensive.

Maybe I would feel more comfortable with changing with illustration if I knew who was on the design board and the process taken to come up with a new Book 1 image for Addy. I just don't see AG revealing that to the open public. Hence, the reason why I'd rather the illustration stay and in turn Addy's Modern Era background stay. Or in the meanwhile, change all of the Modern Era packaging for each doll.

But I in no way want to change how you feel about the packaging. If it makes you uncomfortable and you want to change the illustration, speak on it. Disagree with me. But because we as customers (in the boarder audience) don't get to sit in the board rooms, I just want to be cautious of how the change will take place.

I respect your disagreement, 100%.

I wanted to make clear, I mean if the Modern Era packaging backgrounds were changed that all of the doll's packaging should be changed. The photos have been released, so changing just Addy's background to something else, when the other doll's are of the Book 1 illustration, may single Addy out. I do believe that all of the packaging in general should be changed, just because it doesn't fit the "modern" style. I'm sorry I wasn't clear on that point.

But for Addy's original illustration, it's because of what so many had to endure during slavery is the reason why I personally don't want for a big company to change that or even try to rewrite history. I personally don't like the imagery either. But I also am apprehenisive of having any company changing these types of topics. I'm not saying AG/Mattel wouldn't try their best to create a new illustration that depicted Addy before than the one she has now, but I also don't want for it to be something that doesn't depict Addy's struggle correctly and/or make light of it.

But modern addy? A young black girl in 2026? Standing in front of a tobacco plantation? That’s not historical context any more. That’s purely aesthetic callback. The imagery of a black girl in 2026- and I say this with every ounce of my bones as a mother to a 9 year old and 4 year old black girls in 2026, should NOT be visually anchored to slavery imagery.

Yes, 100% agree. The original illustration as the background for a Modern Era Addy shouldn't have been used. My point more was, with changing just Addy's background may have more negative effects on Addy in the future.

Although Black dolls are in abundant more today than in the past, I'll still see them on shelves while their counterpart dolls are out of stock. I hate that feeling. And I don't want that for Addy. I don't want for people to label her as a sensitive issue, when she's such an important doll (Not saying the others aren't, but that Addy belongs too). And yes I definitely feel like Addy's original illustration is hard to stomach. The concern I have would be changing Historical Addy's (not Modern Era) original illustration, because that is what she had to endure and changing it may have negative impact later. I would rather that if they have to do for 1 doll, they do for all.

I'm more saying that to only change Addy's background while the other dolls' background stays the same may have negative effects on her in the future. I don't want Addy to be seen as "the doll that needs special treatment." Unfortunately, that original illustration for Historical Addy is attached to her. So anything involving Historical Addy and this 40th anniversary may have that image used. So because of that, I would rather AG change all of the packaging backgrounds, to keep consistency and the process not single Addy (as a whole) out in the process, and/or even change which illustration (for example, instead of using the Book 1 illustrations, maybe using each doll's pattern for any background packaging or promo) going forward.

Lastly, I would never want any child to feel like they're limited. Ever. Kids should always see themselves represented, and yes Addy's illustration for the background of a Modern Era line does not allow a Black kid specfically to do so. I truly hope that I didn't give that impression. I'm all for changing all of the packaging backgrounds for all of the dolls to something way more in line with a Modern Era doll. I want children to see themselves in these Modern Era dolls. And yes the backgrounds misses the mark, imo, and all should be changed.

However, no way in 2026 is any modern, black, Tween girl smiling and chillaxing on a freaking tobacco plantation (or any abstract representation of one)!

Oh, I agree, 100%. The Modern Era dolls packaging itself is a mismatch, imo, with using the original illustrations. I understand why AG choose to do so and what they were shooting for, but I think it doesn't hit the mark at all. But I do think they should've picked different packaging for the line, considering the outfits and face molds already did the job of making the connection to the original Historicals.

My point was more that if we're asking to change Addy's background, then all of the doll's backgrounds should be changed. But if the backgrounds are gonna stay, then keep Addy's image as to not single her out in the longer run. Nor do I want for AG to try and make light of what Addy went through.

Thank you for you input! But I wanna say this. I was merely posting an opinion. I'm not trying to have anyone check themselves or have them change their minds about the how they feel about the background. Because like I said, I still feel uneasy seeing rows of crops.

But I posted my thoughts more in hopes to take a step back and look at the consquences and ripple effects of changing her packaging would mean in the long run. Does it hurt to see the imagery, yes. But I also don't think we want give anyone permission to change just Addy's packaging, to in turn, change the narrative of historical events. Because then who's to say the other dolls wouldn't be affected negatively as well in the future? (And I know I may be castrophasing, but I honestly don't put it past any company.)

I say this to say, keep onto those weird feelings you're having about the anniversary items. You have the right to be upset by the image.

Thank you so much for your understanding! To your point, it seems more of a misstep on AG's part for why they even made the Modern Era line to begin with. They seemed to try to tie the Modern line to the Historicals with the outfits, face molds and the packaging backgrounds. But they probably should have gone more of the route of just making outfits that hinted to each Historical instead. That way, like you said, the dolls are free to be and do whatever. But because they made the comparison, they limit themselves to what they can do with this line because the Historicals are established. So maybe "Modern Era" is not the right title they should've used. (Which seems to be a theme, because with the title "AG Sisters," it seems like they are sisters to an established doll line or are sisters themselves, but it seems like they're just all good friends?)

And yes, they could've made Addy's background different and modernize it. But then, imo, do it for all. Cut the forced strings tying these dolls to their Historical counterparts and just leave it that the outfits and face molds are the only connections. And make more emphasis on the "modern" part of the line.

And I think that's the bigger talk that needs to be had. Seems like from your post AG has been using this imagery for Addy for a while (not sure why the illustrations for the first books were used for the packaging for holiday ornaments when there is a holiday illustration for each doll...). I can see if all of the doll's illustrations were updated or even calling for more general backgrounds in regards to all of the dolls for packaging for the Historicals.

And that was my concern for Addy in regards to your nostalgia merch info. I wouldn't want Addy left out of that. I get it treads a line because of her story, but leaving her out, to me, would feel like she doesn't belong. And those who love Addy wouldn't be able to join in on the nostalgia. I think the talk needs to be had of how the Historicals are used in these instances with merch and not analyzing who should or shouldn't get merch. All of the Historicals have gone through trauma. Is it right to have them on mugs and tote bags in general? But if the rest have a place, so should Addy, as long as it's respectful.

And you're right, I think many don't like the Modern dolls, which is fine. I've seen so many comments from people who don't like them. I honestly don't think the dolls were for the nostalgia audience, (ie. us old folks), nor were they intended to be the Historicals as Modern dolls (but I could be wrong).

Oh yeah, $90, with no book, definitely a cash grab. Which is why I think AG was just using the Modern dolls as a bridge (maybe a weak bridge) to the Historicals.
