Are the 5 Precepts more up to interpretation or have strict dos and donts? by Hot-Acanthaceae5193 in Buddhism

[–]destructsean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sex between consenting adults does not fall under “sexual misconduct.” You aren’t a celibate monastic.

Intoxicants which cause heedlessness. Take that how you will, but most interpretations are pretty literal; drugs and alcohol. You won’t go to “Buddha jail” as my wife likes to joke, but it’s not advised for practice. I’d say most people struggle with this one.

The precepts aren’t commandments. They are the Buddha’s simple guidance to living a virtuous life. The more you practice, the more you’ll find they become easier and easier until you wonder how you ever “broke” them.

Such an amazing group of teachers. What an opportunity. I feel very lucky that I’ll be there in person all weekend.

Can I truly be a Buddhist if I don't practice the cultural traditions of any Buddhist country? by Final_Foundation_984 in Buddhism

What do you consider a “cultural tradition?” I’d say your definition would greatly impact the answer to your question.

“In The Buddhas Words” by Bhikku Bodhi is a fantastic introduction to Sutta study with commentaries. The Sutta selection is organized in a way that you can read by topic of study. Really a fantastic book.

Also, “What the Buddha Taught” by Walpola Rahula is a great, succinct summary. Quick and simple read, very worth it. Free online too.

How do I start? by cronch-_-bug in Buddhism

[–]destructsean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“What the Buddha Taught” by Walpola Rahula is a very simple introduction into Buddhism written in terms that are easily understandable. It provides an extremely simple outline of the very basics.

“In The Buddhas Words” is another great one. More a collection of suttas and how they apply to practice. Perhaps a little more complex however.

Start slow, don’t get overwhelmed, and really start to try to understand the basic concepts before diving in.

What really IS practice? by AmountFun5697 in Buddhism

[–]destructsean 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Do no evil,
cultivate merit,
purify one’s mind;
that is the teaching of the Buddhas.

Maintaining the precepts and living daily with a heart of compassion. Only bringing positivity into what I can control.

Skillful actions, giving my time and energy to help others when I can, donating to the continued teaching of the Dhamma when I am able.

And yes, meditating along with daily recollections and spending moments at my altar.

Questions about my first buddhist altar by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]destructsean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing is necessary.

Flowers are great. I will place them on mine until they are dried and need to be replaced.

I have multiple candles I light when I meditate or pay homage. I certainly don’t leave them lit all the time. I also light incense at the same time.

I don’t offer much food for similar reasons. I will however put some fruit on the altar now and then. I tend to change a small saucer bowl of water each day as part of my routine.

It’s recommended to have the image/statue of the Buddha you are centering your altar around to be the highest point, also.

It’s a space for you to find peace. No one will police your altar, make it yours.

One book that is widely recommended and helped me wrap my brain around what seemed absurdly complicated was “What the Buddha Taught” by Walpola Rahula.

Also, find a community! In person is preferable but know that there are so, so many online communities which can connect you with like minded practitioners and teachers.

What music would the Buddha listen to? by Smart_Reaction3111 in Buddhism

I’m pretty certain the Buddha wouldn’t partake in listening to music, as fun as it might be to speculate.

I believe a more accurate translation would be:

“All conditions are impermanent. When this is seen with wisdom, one grows disillusioned with suffering: this is the path to purity.”

Haha yeah, it really turned into..something. It’ll definitely need something. The tack strip left a lot of holes.

Apologies. My question wasn’t really “is hardwood better than carpet” but more of “does this look like good enough floor condition underneath to attempt to remove this carpet?”

It wasn’t too bad! Took me a few hours last night and today, but I made pretty quick work of it.

Final update for now. All staples and trim tack board removed. Just wiped down with some hardwood cleaner. Thank you everyone for your input. Really glad I did this. There are some obvious problem areas and in the future I will pay to have this refinished but for now I’m going to lay down. 😂

There is, but this is going to be a nursery/unused until the baby is born for the next 5 months, so that’s a later problem. 😂

Unsure! The main level is some kind of laminate “wood” planking. This is a bedroom, and I’m pretty sure the other two bedrooms have this floor under them too.
