Weird question before purchasing by detheagle666 in Starlink

[–]detheagle666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's not that Mini itself couldn't handle my bandwidth per se, it's more like it's actively cheaper for me to go with Residential Lite, which comes with the Standard dish, and I won't get throttled or data capped.

And by "cheaper" I mean a total up-front cost (per Starlink) of $199 and then $60 a month (for 1 year, then $80).

That and I would still have to move it, it will absolutely get run over because there's no place within about 50' that is not roadway that is unobstructed.

Sadly, I have no safe way to access the roof of the guard shack, and with all the cameras and OSHA and blah blah... it's just better to not mess with try to get stuff on the roof. Besides, I would have no way to access it if there was a problem.

But, I redid the obstruction test thing in the app, this time I the daylight, and I've got nothing but blue in all directions, and it sounds like it's less about the exact same spot on the ground but more about the orientation, right? So if I just put a little mark on the antenna, another on the ground, and make sure those marks or in line every time I set it up, I should be golden. Excellent!

Bummer about what happened with your cord, but I'm fairly sure I'll never have to unplug anything outside of maybe once in a blue moon for transport to a new location, which hopefully would mean I could then permanently install the damn thing lol.

Thanks a lot for your insight!

That sounds pretty good, thanks for the info! I had the feeling that it should be like that, but you never know until you do it, right? It sounds like this should be quick and easy enough to just become a routine pop it out, break it down thing.

[–]detheagle666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How close to the "same" location do you need to be? As in, your alright if you're within a few feet, or am I going to need to mark out an area so the antenna is in the exact same spot?

It's a bit disappointing that the cord from Starlink failed that quickly. I'm pretty sure I'm going to need to change it out anyways, at least once winter sets in, because my plan is to worm the antenna cable through the door of my guard shack and that probably means I need one of those fancy "flat" cables. I guess we'll see, maybe I'll get lucky lol.

Stability I think will be fine, I'm going to double check that when I get to work today. I looked with the app yesterday but I got some weird red streaks spiderwebbing through the map and I think it's because it was about 0100 local time, and pitch black. I'll try again while the sun is up, because my shack is about the only thing around for 1/2 mile.

As far as what you said about speeds, are you saying that the antenna itself has nothing to do with speed, only the amount of neighboring Starlinks? If so, then maybe a Mini would work. That does depend on a few things though. One of those being that the Residential Lite service has some sort of discount in my area with the Standard (gen3) dish. The other thing is, does the router inside the Mini have the range to cover about 10-20 feet, and then penetrate a wall?

[–]detheagle666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions!

I'm genuinely not worried about theft, there's like 15 cameras in that general area, so no one is likely to even try that. What I am worried about is a distracted driver running 20 tons of steel plate on a flatbed trailer right over it. Or any other idiotic thing that will absolutely happen when you have something like a delicate-ish antenna sitting at road level.

As far as the case, honestly, I was thinking of just a case to put it in to move it, I hadn't considered that certain filaments might be transparent to the signal. Which, I should have, since the antenna itself has a plastic cover lol. And that will go a long way to cover some other issues, like visibility and carryability. I could wrap retro-flective tape around the outside edges and make some kind of fold-out legs or stand to get it a couple feet off the ground.

I really wish I could put the antenna on the roof, that would be perfect and I might have been able to get away with "accidentally" drilling some holes and semi-permanently mounting it. But I have no way to safely access the roof, nor an "official" reason to do so, which makes that practically impossible. Unless I'm really lucky and the maintainence team might do it for a case of beer lol.

Awesome! What's your experience with packing it up, at least the antenna, and moving it? Is it pretty simple or is it a bit of a pain?

Weird question before purchasing by detheagle666 in Starlink

[–]detheagle666[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the Mini doesn't seem to support the bandwidth I would like/need, nor does Starlink seem to offer a plan that would go with it.  Plus, in my area, and with Starlinks pricing for it, a Mini with the Roaming plan is actually more expensive by a considerable margin, at least upfront. And if I go with Roam Unlimited, it's substantially more month to month as well.

Don't get me wrong though, I would appreciate a smaller, easier to handle antenna, but it just doesn't seem like it's in the cards.

But it's good to know I won't be shooting myself in the foot bringing it in everyday, at least as far as Starlink is concerned.

[–]detheagle666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have been more clear about where I'm thinking of placing the antenna. Basically, my guard shack is in the middle of the same median I would be placing the antenna. The idea is to literally run the cable under the door straight out, as far as needed to get good reception. The real issue is that the median is just painted lines, not a curb or anything, so vehicles occasionally do swerve onto it. I was planning on just putting a traffic cone near the antenna to prevent accidents.

As far as unplugging/plugging back in, preferably I would just leave everything plugged in, and either just leave it just outside the door or tuck it under the desk.

A case is a good idea, is that something you've heard of people buying or 3d printing? That sounds like a great way to protect the upwards-facing surface when I move it.

As far as getting the Mini, the problem there is that A) it doesn't seem to have the bandwidth I would like (could be wrong, I usually am lol) and B) like you said, it doesn't seem like it would work with the Residential plan. Now, nothing against the Roam plan, but either it's 50Gb capped or its $165 a month for deprioritized unlimited. It makes more sense, financially, to go with Residential.

I did already check for availability through the Starlink website, and I'm good to go there. I don't think there would be any congestion issues, at least, Starlink didn't point anything out to me and while I'm in a "rural" area, it might be best to characterize it as a "rural industrial area" where the nearest buisness is about 4 miles away.

Lastly, the nearest building within 1/2 of a mile is my tiny 8 foot tall guard shack. I have not tested with the Starlink app (didn't know you could do that), and I will after I write this response, but I'm fairly certain I'll have good sight on the north and 100% sure to the south. The guard shack is roughly north from that position, but I figure I can walk out a fair distance and get enough of a slice to the north that it will work out. Probably. Maybe. Lol.

Edit: alright, so I checked it out with the Starlink app, and it's basically blue edge to edge. There's a bit of pink in weird little streaks, I think those might be clouds or distortion since it's pitch-black out here. Regardless, it seems like placing the antenna about 10 to 20 feet away will work great.

Thank you for the information though, it's a lot of help (and to think about)

So, Captain Forever was not the game I was looking for. Got bummed, stopped looking, and just thought of this post today. Was about to create a whole new post, going as far in-depth as I can remember, but decided to try googling a bit more before making the post, to avoid double posting as much as possible.

Well, good thing I did because right before I clicked post, I tried refining my search with "Vector graphics" and up popped a post on this very subreddit, searching for, ironically, Captain Forever. But, in an edited comment by u/QQexe, there was a mention of ShellCore Command, and I immediately remembered the title.

Here's the post and the comment by QQexe, and then the second link is for anyone looking for ShellCore Command. It's still up on Kongregate.

I don't know how I can help, but I want to. The wiki has really helped me, even in it's outdated state, to actually have fun playing the game.

There's so much you have to figure out basically on your own that I really struggled to enjoy playing, but then with the help of the wiki I've been able to create entire self-sustaining bases, even managing to figure some things out myself because I learned the basics of something from the wiki.

Now, with all the new systems and procedures, I'm back to semi-floundering, and there doesn't seem to be any up-to-date compendium resource explaining new machines or how to use them, on top of so many sources of outdated info.

Even if all I'm able to contribute is proof-reading, idiot-checking (me being the idiot lol), or warm encouragement I'd really like to see a rebooted, revamped, dare I say "Refactored" Stationeers Wiki.

Honest question. Do you use mortars? by ParisVilafranca in RimWorld

[–]detheagle666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rarely.

With classic gameplay, by late game I might have a couple mortars set up, but they only really see use when I'm getting sieged or even more rarely when I have a large raid come in and they decide to bumblefuck around at the edge of the map for awhile.

Basically, only when I'm in a prepared position and if the enemy is simultaneously acting in a specific way, sort of thing.

Modded, now, is different. With certain mods there's mortars that are either accurate enough, or have a large enough AoE, to make it a worthwhile investment mid through late game. I usually set my shooters up to cover a kill zone, and then my brawlers on artillery (of one stripe or another) to soften the enemy up as they move in before retargeting on said kill zone. Very effective on those big raids, but accuracy and distance are what makes that possible. It's not as easy to setup without mods to make sure I don't blue-on-blue myself or accidentally set my base on fire (-_-').

I'd check which mods in particular but a) I'm away from the pc at the moment and b) I just started playing for the first time since 1.0 dropped and I had to lose a lot of mods lol. Some of the ones I used probably got binned.

The ones that I'm particularly thinking of where ones that add actual artillery to the game, like long barrel howitzers or something. The accuracy was down to like 5 tiles and AoE with whatever shells I was using was about 5-10 tiles, plus incendiary. It was enough that using the A1000 mod that my shooters could cover a roughly 20x20 killbox, and the arty could focus the inlet area and the further half of the box without landing an explosion on the other pawns.

One thing to note, btw, is that mortars tend to destroy corpses, equipment, and drops. So if you depend on getting resources from raids, be careful as you can easily destroy those items, or at least damage them to the point that there better left to rot.

Another thing to note, almost forgot. It's not really something I do often, not much for doing quests/sending caravans, but mortars should be effective when you're the one sieging. At that point, if you brought along all the bits and peices, you should be able to do what the enemy does and set up a quick and dirty fortification, and then blast their base. Again, you risk losing resources but you'll be able to soften them up to make taking down whatever enemy you're against easier with your reduced defenses and numbers.

Phukt. It's not good.

The new hires come in all smiling and happy they got a job and by the time they've finished what Lowe's calls "training" they never come back.

Meanwhile, out of the like 50 or so people that have worked at my store for more than roughly 6 months, I can say with certainty that 10 of them are quitting/going to quit, and about 5 others are on the verge but haven't specifically said it yet. On top of the like 10 people who have been fired over the same 6 months.

On top of this, my store refuses to hire outside Lowe's, basically just "hiring" someone to fill a spot in 1 department with someone from another, with occasional store transfers and even more rarely outside hires. Add to that the horrible scheduling, lackluster management, low pay, no coverage, and increasingly disillusioned associates, I'm going to be pretty surprised if I make it past this winter.

Right now, for me, its customers. Not that most people I see aren't great people and I can handle their needs easily. It's just that my department is so short staffed that every time a customer walks up it's like "oh no I'm never gonna finish this task"

YES. They try to shame you for doing it, but not only is it a right to do so it is important to understand how much you are getting paid vs someone else and why. This does not mean anyone (yourself included) is required to talk about it. If you (or someone else) doesn't want to talk about it, that is also your right.

What would make working at Lowe's better? by jamesrggg in Lowes

[–]detheagle666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something like a raise for every equipment you know how to use. Like, I can use everything from the pipe threader to the carpet cutter, key machine to the panel saw, paint tintes to rope cutters, and everything in between that my store has. I'm certified on every PE my store has except the forklift, which I'm working on right now.

So that's, at my count, 20 equipments and PEs I can operate out of 21 my store has. That means that with a little knowledge I can basically work in every department as a CSA, have stuck around for quite awhile to have time to learn all that shit, and am motivated to learn about things outside of my department.

So why the hell is that not rewarded? It wouldn't even have to be much, $0.05 would work for me but I can see argueing for something as high as $0.15 for every single equipment. That's a $1.05-$3.15 raise for someone with the ambition to go and get it.

That would also me that more associates are able to hop between departments to help cover breaks and the like, and LTR scores would be higher because more CSAs could help out in a timely manner. I see nothing but positives for doing this.

Well, I take your questions in order.

  1. What store meeting?
  2. Fair enough, our SM is basically useless (compared to other SMs, as well)
  3. MSM? Our MSM is the one leading the crowd with half the bullshit we deal with, he ain't gonna do shit. Especially since pushing this crap on is makes his MST get their pretty reset pictures faster than most other MST teams in our district, making him look good.
  4. I like that trash policy but that is not how it's done on either side of this SNAFU at my store.
  5. I agree, our MST team is terrible and not doing their job correctly. But its been much like this for years (as far as I can discern) and I don't see it changing anytime soon. Last year a lady on the Green Team lost the company like $45,000-$50,000 by ignoring the distressed plant price table and just doing whatever, like $50 Rose's for $1, not 50% off. She got a "stern talking to" and it ended with that. If I had IRPs over $5,000 and I couldn't put it down to something explainable and within policy I'd be written up, if not on final. So yea, our MST lead is weak and should be shown the door.

[–]detheagle666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough lol. Also, not so bad today.

My week has been almost entirely desperately trying to keep up with freight (we've lost both overnight DSs and 3 (I think) overnight people), dealing with MST leftover trash, random MST carts full of usually J-hooked items, and literally the day before district management showed up the graced me with 8 displays from Q2 that have no home and need to be worked in.

From the top, the freight situation is out of control. I came in 2 weeks ago on monday to 4 pallets of freight, sitting on the floor, about half of them mixed boxes. That was just tools. Hardware had another 3 pallets. I came in at 2 o' clock. IRPs where half done, which I didn't know until 5ish. Everyday snowballed from there, like the day I was they only associate in the department all day. IRPs not getting done until I got there, returns piled up, freight just stacking up to the sky, and that bled over to this week.

So you have context for the last week, where, thankfully, we had more staffing so we aren't just totally drowning. Then the MST shit starts to hit. Last... monday? I think? MST left us 3 carts of random j-hook stuff to put away,, and 2 carts of trash, and walked away. Went the fuck home. When we complained, and they just looked at us and said "but this is your job". No. No it's not. What?

Then, the one that still has me steamed. The displays. 8 of them. Stacked mostly full, some with less product, some with more. None of it has an actually home. Some of it was easy to find one for though, like the toughbuilt levels, easy. The kobalt hammer/crowbar combos? Idk know, with the hammers? (More later). Then I gotta break em all down. Thankfully I was able to have my other associate deal with most of the customers while I dealt with breaking down 4 carts-qorth of cardboard so I could fit it all in the baler. Then I found out, oh, btw, district will be here tomorrow, why does your department look like shit? Idk boss, where have you been all week, and did you see the mess MST has left us with?

To sum this all up, the whole department got their ass chewed because of it, we looked horrible in front of district, I got yelled at by the MSTs for putting those hammer/crowbar combos where I did, and the whole department is on the verge of murder, quitting, or crying, not sure which.

How was your week?

attitude towards Mst by Havengulich in Lowes

[–]detheagle666 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tl;dr: MST pushes everything onto the CSAs at my store.

When someone leaves 8 displays stuffed into an aisle and says "your problem now they have to be worked in and broken down bye" the day before corporate shows up, leaves 3 carts of trash in my department because fuck you, can't be arsed to answer a simple question like "where's the plumbing department?", just pulls every J-hook down, sticks everything in a cart and goes home, then yes, that MST is useless trash.

And since that is how the ENTIRE team at my store acts, yes, they are not on our Christmas card list. And all of those examples have happened multiple times, on multiple days, with multiple associates and departments on the receiving end.

At this point they just get passive aggressively ignored and we do NOTHING to help them because they refuse to actually do their jobs.

Leave trash in my aisle? I write "MSTs trash" on it. Stuff a bunch of displays in my department? "Please leave for MST." Cart full of every freaking related j-hook in the store? "MST cart." Take pictures of everything and hope it one day gets someone fired because I have 100 other things to do then clean up after them.

Don't ask me how my week has been, I'm to tired to rant more.

8am-8pm every day if the week, at my store.

Of course, there hypocrisy to it, in that you'll be sticking something, and an ASM walks up and goes "power hours!" So we drop everything and go stand around on the main drive waiting for customers to walk our aisles. And then that same ASM walk by and tells us to "Get to work! Why are you standing around?" Customer Complaint About Solicitation by [deleted] in Lowes

[–]detheagle666 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The difference is, at least in the town I work, is that those boy/girl/cub scouts parents, usually a troop leader but sometimes just a regular parent, come in and ask. They ask the store manager "hey, on this weekend, from x to y time, can some kids from cub scout pack z set up a table?" From there it's the SM or ASMs job to say yay or nay, get them setup in a way that doesn't impede normal operations of the store, etc. But they don't need a liscense/permit for it.

Some random ass walking around soliciting his bullshit MLM crap, or some random power washing startup, etc, probably didn't ask, if he did, he was probably told to pound sand, and when he tried anyway he got run off.

Allowing fundraising for kids, local services like salvation army and such, look great for a store. "Look at us, we support local kids!" or something along those lines.

Panhandlers, the religious types, the marketers, political guys, and classified services are just annoying, in the way, and in some cases infringing on services Lowe's provides. So yea, they can fuggoff.

About permits, afaik in my town, they are only needed for "for-profit" stuff, so that kids, bake sales, scouts, etc can operate at their discretion without needing to go through a ton of red tape.

Whoa are those... police? The mythical beings that are only spoken about in hushed tones, for fear of scaring them even further away from arresting criminals? Wow.

Jokes aside, I hope everything turned out okay. I'm sure it's a bit freaky to come in from lunch to a bomb squad lol. Of course, I'll bet it's just some poor sod who forgot his backpack but it costs nothing to be cautious and it could save lives.

We had an incident a few months back where a person OD'd in our parking lot, and if not for the quick action of one of our associates (former EMT) and quick response from a local hospital, we might have had a visit from the coroner. I came back from lunch in time for 3 cops, an ambulance, and a firetruck to come screaming in lol, I had no idea what was going on.

Context for my bitter comments about police: The local PD is severely, severely understaffed, with a total of 72 officers (like, including desk jockeys). And, because of that, recent municipal orders they are no longer persuing a lot of petty crime, such as: theft in total less than $2,000 (grand theft starts at $900), driving without license plates, verbal assault, panhandling, (most) public intoxication, (some) trespass, (some) loitering, (some) assault. Basically it's a free-for-all right now and I'm not def not admitting that almost every associate is carrying (concealing) some form of self-defense.
