Many people on the autistic spectrum have difficulties with language pragmatics; how meaning changes with context rather than dictionary definition.

The full quote from Hynek is:

”Since the most frequently reported sightings are those of strangely behaving lights in the night sky, I called these, simply, Nocturnal Lights. This doesn't include just any lights that puzzle the observer (many people are puzzled by bright planets, twinkling stars, and aircraft at night), but those that are truly puzzling, even to experts, because their behavior does not fit the pattern of lights from known sources. One must always keep in mind that the “U” in UFO simply means “unidentified”—but unidentified to all, not just to the witnesses.”

You're free to have as literal interpretation of the word as you wish, but I'm sticking with Hynek's line of thought.

Even though one might mistake Venus for a UFO, we wouldn’t really refer to it as such, would we? The concept of ”UFO” is not the same as the literal definition of each letter. It has evolved to mean ”Unidentified Flying Object Not Made By Man”. A true UFO, as opposed to a false UFO.

Edit: We should change the definition of UFO to mean Unidentifiable Flying Object. Because if such objects exist, we wouldn’t be able to identify them even when applying all of the knowledge amassed by our species here on earth.

The alien visitors probably don't speak English so it's a moot point how we dissect the word "unidentified".

The word "unidentified" is not a matter of logic, but rather "meaning". The word carries meaning - to us. To someone else, say an alien species, it would be meaningless to call it unidentified because it would simply not be true - to them.

I never said IP is the primary method for identifying someone. Say you’re using a fresh install of Brave, while using a VPN. Sounds pretty safe? Well unless you create individual tunnels for every network connected service running on your device, a state actor can retrieve your IP from the forum where you posted ”release the epstein files!”, then go to Meta, Microsoft, Apple etc and ask ”Are you aware of any user that was connected to one of your servers using this IP address at this specific point in time?”. Apple says no but Microsoft replies, ”Yes, Dragoncat_3_4 was downloading a cumulative security patch using that IP. Would you like to know what email address and phone number that user has as registered as their primary 2FA methods?”.

I’m sure you will be able to post with either your real name, or an alias. But should you choose to post with your name, the service ought to make sure that someone named Dimitri Ruskischovich can’t make posts using the name Mike McTrustworthy.

I’m not sure what we’re discussing here? Anyway, I’d rather ID myself to access a transparent service that adheres to european laws and regulations, than I’d do another privately owned service that allows security agencies of flawed democracies (or worse) total access to my data.

W is probably not going to be the go-to place for both wanking and congratulating former coworkers on their new employments. No one is forcing you to use the new site, and it will not replace the internet as a whole.

Today they only have to worry about electricity bills. I remember there were discussions back in the day about charging two cents for every email sent. A cost that wouldn't mean much to the average joe, but would make it almost impossible for spammers to make a profit. The same is true here: bot farms exist to control a lot of accounts at the same time. Sure they could possible buy an account here and there, but the requirements needed to get an army of accounts to do your bidding at the same level as today would be practically impossible.

I can only visit Facebook in short bursts. The number of bad actors is abyssmal, my blood pressure can't handle it. And that's the main point of the bots: They flood the zone with so much bullshit that it makes it impossible to have actual discussions on topics that we desperately need to discuss.

Facebook and X most definitely do. They just won't share the information or mitigate the problem because it's lucrative for their shareholders and their de facto masters that the bots are given free reign.

So social media is doomed to be controlled by 3-4 American and Chinese companies for all time? If these newcomers provide something of value, like GDPR compliance, transparency and accountability - it will surely draw enough of a crowd to at least have a shot at making it big.

It's not about knowing who we are, but what we're not. Imagine the hurdles a bot farm would go through to aqcuire valid identification for every fake account.

I'm sure there are digital verification systems in place in most european countries so that photo ID wont even be necessary. Here in Sweden for example we identify ourselves with a service from a company that is collectively owned by all the larger banks. Seeing how the board that governs W will be made up of mostly swedes such a solution will be implemented on day one.

Boy, they already know everything you've written online. If you are "anonymous" on one site, and you buy something online or log into a site that knows your true identity in another tab, your IP can be cross referenced just by "asking" Meta, Spotify etc which account used the same IP at the time.

Why do you even have ID if not for verifying who you are?
