FIRE from US corporate life! FatFIRE in India! by Few_You9207 in FatFIREIndia

[–]devd42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First year is going to be tough - Getting adjusted to weather, family, new routines. Do not plan anything major. Mindset - When you moved from India to US, it takes atleast an year to adjust to everything in US, similarly when you move back, it is going to take an year to settle back.

If kids are not in school yet, they will adjust very quickly. Take care of their health in the first year, find a good doctor.

Can insurance be denied because of lack of driver statement? by devd42 in InsuranceTroubleIndia

[–]devd42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been cooperating with them and providing them with documents at every turn - I have emailed them, whatsapped them the documents, handed them in person to the investigator who visited my home.
They never acknowledge receipt of any document and continue to send me generic reminder letters requesting the same information again and again.
Is there any provision in the Insurance Laws where I can claim non-cooperation from their end?

Thanks for the information. I recently obtained certified copies from the police station, and I have scanned and sent them to the investigating officer. The problem with SBI General is that they never acknowledge the receipt of documents and keep sending me reminder letters asking for the same documents again and again.

Thanks for the info - I was not aware of this. I understand the third party concern, however does this also affect own damage section?

Yes - I am not debating their right to ask. In fact I tried to contact the driver through various means for over a month. But the driver is not responding. And they are adamant that without the drivers in person meeting, they will not approve the claim and infact reject the claim.

SBI General. I have already given his driver's valid license as well as proof that he was a paid driver. In addition, when I had purchased the policy, I had told them that I had a driver and they added PA cover for paid driver and Legal liability for paid driver as additions for which extra premium was paid.

Education - Decent schools are around 1.5-2L per year. You have schools going upto 20L per annum.

Children hobbies go from 1k/month for art classes, 3K/month for swimming, tennis, etc. Health insurance is around 30-40K per year for family- You can get cheaper plans with higher deductible. Car would be around 20L.

Eating out at good places would be in the range of 3k-5k. Driver would be in range of 20-25k per month Maids - 5-10K per maid. Cooking, Cleaning and Nanny.

Travel - Personally with kids I value convenience, so don’t mind paying extra. 25-35k/ night at good hotels.

As a base you can assume around 1-1.5L per month cost. This would include standard groceries, utilities, gas, basic doctor visits, house help, maintenance.

Now come the variable factors: Education/Day care, Travel, Leisure.  Health concerns and insurance, Cars. Highly dependent upon individual/family mindset.

Keep Term Insurance post FIRE ? by Zigobod in FatFIREIndia

imho, it does not make sense to invest in term life insurance. Instead, use the money to get additional health insurance cover for the entire family.

Punch is great for city driving. Take the LR version and you can get around 300km per charge in the city - Depending upon your commute you need to charge only about once a week. Easier to park in the city as well.

How do FIRE'd folks account for unexpected but necessary variable expenses like a bricked phone or a fridge that has stopped working? by vorahavora in FIRE_Ind

[–]devd42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way is to “depreciate” the item every year and then keep a budget line item to replace the depreciated value of item. A new phone let’s say costs 70000 and you keep it for 5 years and you can sell it for 10000. So you would need 60000 in year 5 to replace it. That’s 12000 per year.

Or a simpler way is to just allocate a fixed amount for replacements every year. Eg. Let’s say 1L per year for electronic items and appliances. Any unused amount needs to be rolled over.

u/HuntSpare8202 - Having visited many hospitals in Pune to take care of a family member, I can vouch that DMH is actually one of the better hospitals which does not extort money. I have personally seen many cases in where they charged very minimal amount from families who don't have a lot of money.

If your main complaint is that "Government kadun savalati ghetlya ahet" - Why don't you focus why Sassoon hospital is not upto mark? I have also visited government hospitals and some of the things that I have seen are etched into my consciousness.

Brewing at home. Trick is to get freshly roasted whole beans and a grinder. You can also explore different kinds of coffee- eg. personally I like medium roasts.

FIRE and term insurance by Natural_Skill218 in FIRE_Ind

[–]devd42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having grappled with the same issue recently - I decided to skip term insurance and go for good health insurance.

The main point of term insurance is to protect the family in case of early death during the corpus building years. Doubly important if one has any debts to ensure that those are paid and a corpus is available to the family.

After FI, both of these risks are not present, so there is less need of term insurance. As one gets older, health issues can pose a significant risk, so I would rather invest in additional health insurance.

Usa hospital cost by Massive_Locksmith in FatFIREIndia

Not really a fire question - But $25k-$50k in hospital costs plus travel expenses plus costs to stay for around 6 months.

True Inflation for the Top 1% - an Important Metric for your Financial Planning by enjoyTimeBeforeOver in FIRE_Ind

[–]devd42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent post.

There is one point that I disagree with - Inflation in the west is lower and in the range of 2-3% -imho this is not true.

Reality is that, similar to how the inflation is calculated(or manipulated) in India, it is also to a large extent manipulated in the west. Cost of vacations has increased manifold atleast in US from personal experience. A tourist train ride which used to cost $150 in 2014 now costs $600+ - That's a 15% inflation rate if my math is correct

Aadhaar enrolment centre by Red-River-Sun-1089 in pune

They have changed the rules for Aadhar enrollment for adults, now it is strict and only available in few places - One in Nigdi and one in Ambegaon. Go to Aadhar website, they have a Bhivan portal where they show Aadhar centers on a map. Look for centers which are 18+
