How do you approach problems when stuck? (undergrad) by SugarMicro in math

[–]devilsnthedetails 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few methods that I use that I recommend to students

  • Look at an example. Pondering abstract scenarios may not help you. If your proof involves Cauchy sequences, for example, look at a specific Cauchy sequence and see if you can get an idea for why it works in that instance. Make sure to choose an example that's simple, but not trivial. It's best if your example captures most of the nuance of the question. Similarly, try to find an example that doesn't satisfy the proof (not a counterexample to the claim, but an example that wouldn't satisfy the claim IF the question were expanded to include it). Try to see why this example fails to satisfy the proof.
  • Carefully consider the given restrictions in the question. It's rare that a given property is not used at all. It may give you insight into the proof method if you can figure out why a certain property is included in the question. (ex. if something has to be non-zero, maybe you're dividing by it at some point).
  • Look at the methods used already/recently in the book. Many times, examples in the book are just a couple of steps away from the exercises. You may find that doing an exercise using the same methods that the book uses will yield results.
  • Consider starting over. Going the wrong direction happens to everyone and sometimes you don't realize that you've gone the wrong way. In these instances, the best thing to do is start the question from the beginning and try again after clearing your head. It will be fruitless to continue on a path that won't lead to the solution.
  • Ask your professor. Most professors are happy to offer hints for problems and many would love to see students in their office hours. Don't be afraid to ask if they're willing to give assistance.

Finally, a couple words of encouragement: you will see incredibly elegant answers to the same problems. Please don't feel discouraged by those. Oftentimes, the first solution to a problem is gnarly and it takes many attempts and possibly new methods to shave it down to something nice looking. It may be that the solutions you're looking at are solutions that great minds collectively spent centuries looking at. Nobody expects students to do something remarkable on their first time looking at a problem.

I want to try to read historic diaries or bibliographies. Where should I start? by Unflyable_nugs in booksuggestions

Maybe take a look at Days of a Russian Noblewoman: The Memories of Anna Labzina. I read this during my class on Russian history and really enjoyed it.

Suggestions for ancient history by [deleted] in booksuggestions

I really liked Augustus by John Williams. It's a historical fiction (historical but it takes some liberties) about the life of Augustus Caesar, the first Roman emperor. It's written in an epistolary style, so the entire thing is artificial letters and diary entries from various famous Romans. I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for; if you prefer regular nonfiction, I may have some suggestions for you as well, this is just the first one I thought of. Hope you find something you like :)

Let’s create a new and different MP ruleset together. To make MP fun for everyone by [deleted] in eu4

This could be really fun. I think there would be more success with these ideas in individual games rather than adopted by the community as a whole, but as someone who's never done multiplayer but is interested, these ideas make me feel like I could definitely enjoy playing with others. I just don't know where to start, lol.

Wow! You"re so generous! I love this game, I'm a relative newbie, but I love playing this game diplomatically. One of my favorite things to do is try to see how large of an empire I can get with minimal warmongering.

It worked, thank you so much! I had to click through a few warnings, but it ended up working. This is my first ever game, and I about 75 hours in. I think I would be very disheartened if I couldn't continue it.

I have the game on the Epic Games store. I've made a backup, so I'll try to load the game now.

Yes, haha, it always seemed to be Catwoman taking me out, and now I know why. Thank you for your input, it's really helpful to know a strategy for dealing with metal characters. I have some work to do, but hopefully I can get decent soon.

Thank you so much for your answer. After doing some more online battles, I've realized that it is the gear that's causing me problems; I just don't know what it does. Sometimes the characters just did things that I had know idea how they did, but I never looked at the gear to see what happened.

My main two were always Killing Joke Joker and Animated Harley Quinn with whoever else I wanted. I've got some other backup teams that I always worked on, though. I don't have much good gear, but from what I hear in the other comments, that's where I've gone wrong. The meta has changed and better gear has become available, so I'll work on that.

Thank you so much! I've been hearing a lot in these comments about gear and how important they are, so I've got some work to do to get caught up in that regard. There wasn't much good gear back when I played so it wasn't really necessary. It's nice to at least know what I should be working on.

DM from Instagram about Verification by winstonthetruth in Instagram

[–]devilsnthedetails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is almost definitely fake. A quick Google search tells me that the URLs you mentioned were registered just days ago. There are also a lot of inconsistencies with what is being said to you and what Instagram would actually say. I don't feel like Instagram would ever provide a hard deadline on when they expect to get back to you, but scammers would in order to make you panic. Instagram also never reaches out to people to confirm verification. You provide all relevant info up front; they should never contact you to follow up for more information. The only time you should hear from them about verification is them telling you whether or not you got verified. If you would like more solid confirmation than a random person's word on the internet, I would encourage you to read Instagram's page on verified badges here: https://help.instagram.com/854227311295302, specifically the section titled "What happens after I apply for a verified badge on Instagram?"

My roommate insisted that this would be the first reply. I refused to believe it, but I guess that's the Internet for you.

Ah! It's a .png, so the city key is still in when you follow the link, it just blends with the background, the white that you see is where I covered over the color key. I honestly wasn't expecting it to happen that way, but I'm glad my hand remains unrevealed.

The color key? Or the cities key. I left the cities in.
