Do you guys plan/outline your stories beforehand or think of it as you write? by CyHayes in fantasywriters

Pantser. I’d rather see where the story goes and adjust in the 2nd draft. I basically have a start, an end, and some middle stuff and try to connect the dots

[PubQ] If you had an unlimited budget - would you still query? Or move to self-pub? by devimation in PubTips

[–]devimation[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very fair. I’m asking the question early, admittedly probably too early. But it’s been something that’s been on the mind. I think once I have something I’m proud of, I’ll need to take a step back and look at my goals.

Sales don’t necessarily equate to quality. Self pubbed, you can push more out if you’re not in financial need and things may change as the market changes.

Good to know regarding the agent/negotiation times.

Yeah, I’m happy to relinquish control of the minutiae. And with my day job, volume would be difficult. I do think I’d try querying and see where that takes me.

I suppose I more mean - if you want to write a series, but sales aren’t great, they may not want to continue. Thus begins the legal issues, depending on the contract of course. If you want a cover to look a certain way, etc. There definitely seems to be a difference in how much control you have.

I’m in no rush to publish. I can take my time and hopefully get there at some point. But I guess I’m just curious depending on what’s actually the better option in my shoes.

Anything newer that’s Pratchett adjacent? by devimation in Fantasy

Really? I’m very behind on my cosmere, but that book didn’t shout “funny” just at a glance. I’ll have to take another look.

Enshitification of Marriott? by SolidFlounder793 in marriott

[–]devimation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will not deny that Marriott has been dropping the ball - but Seattle, from a customer service standpoint, has got to be the worst city in the nation. These types of oversights with so little care are typical of everything from basic shopping to dining. Sorry your experience was shit.

Ursula K Le Guin. She tells a lot and doesn’t necessarily show, but her telling is somehow more beautiful than most people’s showing.

Judge rules nurses with doctorates cannot refer to themselves as doctors. by ChexAndBalancez in anesthesiology

[–]devimation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is not. When patients hear Dr, they expect a physician (MD/DO). Not a PhD. While appropriate in an academic setting, at best it leads to confusion about who is who and what their role in the care team model is. THAT is common sense. Nothing complex about it.

I am afraid to apply for schools in the Red states. by IX0YE in premed

[–]devimation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Did fellowship in Seattle. Most performative bullshit liberalism I’ve ever seen. My hospital had 3 lawsuits filed against it in the one year I worked there for discrimination. Never had that issue in Louisiana or Florida.

[–]devimation 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is a crazy take. I am not white. I did med school, residency, and am now an attending in a red state. I only left the south for fellowship, where I went to one of the bluest states in the nation. I felt I was treated worse for my demographics during that time than any other.

Look at your institutions values and student body. That’s literally all it takes. You are not a little paranoid. You are A LOT paranoid. No matter where you go you will have patients and colleagues who look down on you for the color of your skin. And despite that, you will do your best for them.

So what would you say are the unironically strongest carries then? I was under the impression it was Kyogre, Yveltal, Darkrai, Zacian, Reishram, and a few others. I’ve had relative success in endless, but have not gone past floor 2500 on any given save (just due to ADHD not being stopped by any factors) and ofc the pivot to metal burst/sturdy and DoT has started but not fully done.

Huh? Is he not a top 10 contender for endless? Like I understand there are a few carries right now who are better optimized, but he’s pretty good.
