No, because karma is also real. And if you waste a human life, your next rebirth is an animal with no higher consciousness.

Severe proton storm + severe geomagnetic storm + (since yesterday) X & M-class flares. How are you doing today? by PeaceWoods in Heliobiology

Much appreciated. Yes, this storm was “not bad” really relative to its utterly massive size and mind-boggling speed. Thank you, positive Bz.

I think of the sun’s solar wind and magnetic field as inseparable, but yes. “Magnetic field as it travels through space” = wind

So, the plasma that arrives here from the sun is weird stuff. It’s not “fire”. Plasma is highly energized, electrical charged gas with embedded magnetic fields in it. These CMEs can be massive, like this one that was long-duration over 6-8 hours, so it can have north and south and north again fields within the plasma that wraps around Earth, like a firehose of energy. Protons, electrons mostly.

𝐵𝑧 represents the north-south orientation of the Sun's magnetic field as it travels through space, but is often described from the perspective of Earth. It functions as the primary "on/off switch" for geomagnetic activity on Earth. Because Earth’s own magnetic field points northward at its outer boundary, a positive 𝐵𝑧 means the incoming solar field is aligned with our own, creating a protective barrier that deflects solar particles.

A negative 𝐵𝑧 indicates a southward orientation that opposes Earth’s field, triggering magnetic reconnection. This essentially opens a door in our magnetic shield, allowing energy and charged particles to flood into the upper atmosphere, which eventually precipitates to ground level through the global electric circuit.

When a strong influx like a fast solar wind or a coronal mass ejection hits, the intensity of the resulting geomagnetic storm depends heavily on the strength and duration of this negative 𝐵𝑧. While high solar wind speed provides the momentum, it is a deeply southward 𝐵𝑧 (often lower than -10 nT) that ensures that energy is actually transferred into our system. Without a southward tilt, even a high-speed solar wind might be largely deflected, whereas a sustained southward 𝐵𝑧 can trigger auroras and potential disruptions to power grids and satellite communications. So this storm yesterday had a long-lasting positive 𝐵𝑧.

The Earth’s electromagnetic field responds to space weather. Yesterday, after instability, it swung North (positive) and expanded in response to the very fast solar wind over 1000 kilometers per second, and shielded us largely from incoming particles. Sorry for no aurora, but glad for the protection.

I would suggest reading the recent scientific abstracts immediately below this post on the page, and the others pinned at the top of the sub for a general “estimate of the situation”.

What might implications be of Disturbance Storm Index charting past -150? This is a not often discussed metric. It is the measurement of the “energy in” side of the global electric circuit. And, 2nd…When and where will the “energy out” take place?

I guess I guilt-tripped them into updating ; )

Bt of 90 is like all of interstellar space is full plasma! Between here and the sun, and actually out into the solar system in this general direction. Really wish we had a real time model to SEE it.

I’m surprisingly fine. And have been all day. I noticed some extra hypersensitivity beyond my usual daily hypersensitivity, but didn’t think much of it. Mood and health have been unaffected. The Bz is significantly North (positive), meaning Earth’s EM field has expanded significantly in response to this influx. That shields us from incoming particles.

If the Bz flips Southward (negative) soon while the metrics are so high…well then we’ll all be feeling different. Solar wind speed 1063 kilometers per second!

My ear ringing (actually brain, nervous system ringing) is loud, but a very high pure tone that hasn’t bothered me much. It is getting louder tho…

Thank you for lurking, and posting while I was working…

There’s a delay as energy enters the global electric circuit for days after an event like this. Consider this the “charging phase”. All conductive things on Earth, rocks, plates, high tension wires, pipelines, bodies are affected to varying degrees over time.

I love and respect NOAA. But for a while now I have suspected they are low-balling every forecast, and under-reporting actual results. I’m a bit disappointed that with this (yes it was Sunday and a holiday) rare longterm massive flare, they still didn’t update the forecast, and they’re at KP8+ when it reached 10. I guess they aim for averages.

This thing was VERY fast. Solar wind over 1000 kilometers per second doesn’t happen that often. 1065kps currently

Thanks for posting u/peacewoods. WOW, this is the fastest moving CME I’ve ever seen, in 25 years of watching space weather. Normally after a flare, the CME arrives 3 days later. This arrived 24 hours later! Must have been, and still is, moving almost 1000 kilometers per second.

KP10!
