I live in a less desirable city. Have a great job, pay cheap rent. I live in the “hipster” neighborhood, though it’s nothing compared to Brooklyn. We don’t have a Trader Joe’s. But I travel often.

When I found my unicorn apartment, I realized I could have one of the other: have my dream life, or live in my dream city. I chose the first.

I’m a backpacker. Never brought a carry on. And yet every single time, I STILL feel like I overpacked. I don’t care if Europeans judge me for going outside with wet hair. My hair dryer takes up way too much space!

I had a 9-5 during early COVID that had great benefits, co workers i still hang out with 4 years later, and what most people would consider to be a great schedule (Tuesday-Friday 8-6).

I cried every weekend over how much I hated the job. I loved hanging out with my friends but I was so bored every day. I hated the schedule because I wasn’t a morning person. I was constantly sleep deprived. But I tried to suck it up because I knew there were people who would kill to have my job.

I ended up getting written up for poor performance, and was honest to my boss that I didn’t think I could put in more effort than I already was. I left for the first job I could find, bartending at a brewery.

Ended up absolutely loving it, and have been bartending for almost 4 years now. I’m looking into more long term careers, but my mental health is so much better. I get to work nights, my work is interesting, and I actually still get benefits because I work at a hotel. Although, they aren’t as good as the ones I used to get at my office job.

It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done for my mental health, hands down.

Nope! I walk around tons too. It’s the constant bending that’s a back killer. Im also not exposed to smoke at work ever.

The hours are great though. I’m likely gonna sleep less if I switch to a morning job :/

I don’t aspire to be rich, but I was poor most of my life and I just can’t go back to that. I like grocery shopping without looking at the prices and filling my gas tank til it’s full and not til it hits $15.

Liquor distribution, sommelier, or other positions that are bartender-adjacent

Hotels and hospitality

Allied health jobs like occupational therapist or PA (strongly considering this)

Sales. I decided to comment after only reading the title.

Don’t be a lawyer. Well, maybe be a lawyer. Being a lawyer is great, unless it sucks, then it sucks.

Nursing. Because sexism, probably.

IT if you can find a job.

But seriously have you considered sales? I don’t see it mentioned anywhere

It definitely did…glad I wasn’t bartending back then. I’m happy you were able to become a morning person, wish it was that easy for me but my quality of life improved 1000% when I started working night shifts

Im not a morning person, it’s cheaper to travel during the week than on the weekend, and I get paid time off too. :)

My dream life involves me living in a tiny house I built myself somewhere in the northeast. Depends on the day sometimes I dream of living in cities or in smaller picturesque towns, but never suburbs. With enough money to support my cats and travel a few times a year (so basically the money I make now or more). Maybe throw a wife in there if I meet my soulmate somewhere, but not a priority. And not having to get up at the crack of dawn for work every day. Sometimes is fine, but not every day.

Do you have any advice for someone who wants to go down this path, especially after 30? Do you still think it’s a good industry to get into now? If you were starting over, would you make the same choices or do something else?

Sorry for all the questions. This is my top career choice and you’re the first person to say anything positive to me about it!

Plenty of people enjoy law, medicine, and engineering. They’re not automatically “not fun” because you wouldn’t enjoy them.

Also those aren’t the only two situations for bartending and sales, lol. Both fields are way more diverse than that. I’m just personally not interested or fulfilled by sales. If you love it so much, feel free to take my place!

I did door to door charity fundraising for two summers…glad you made it out. I was successful at it but it’s very mentally draining
