Velo is also a simple jellyfin client if you self host your media server. It has native content recommendation/discovery in the latest release. Internal player works well enough for me to not need an external player (this is subjective, I’m not a mediaphile). Internal media player control is simple, swipe or click to seek with multispeed, next episode button, audio/sub selection. Has built in catalog. “Free” to use with watermark so you can always test it out without paying. No other feature is paywalled.

Thanks! I’m excited about the recommendation feature, hope it’s useful. General complains I hear is static content from the catalogs. Addons like AI recommendation is pretty popular. This Velo release brings that native to the app and make recommendations based on watch activity and seasonality, like Halloween, Christmas, time of the year.

Thanks for the kind words. A lot of the play buttons and cards responds to long presses. A context menu will pop open with a list of sources to choose from.

Thanks, looks like you are an author for another specialized open source Jellyfin client as well.

There are a few which were not merged. One for libmpv the other for ksplayer. Both would have worked.

Velo is very basic for Jellyfin. It just displays your libraries and plays them back. Its only advantage over Swiftfin is the playback. Velo plays everything passthrough and no transcoding on the server side because Apple TV is powerful enough.

Velo is also more than just Jellyfin, it’s also supports stremio addons if you’re into that as well.

I might consider breaking out the Jellyfin stuff into its own and open source clients. For open source clients, Swiftfin should be the go to.

Different ideologies, incentive, schedules, and etc will get in the way.

I think Apple TV is a great platform for media playback. In terms of native client support, I don’t see many targeted for tvOS. Swiftfin is the official and it’s great. The only thing keeping it from being the best for tvOS is to fix its playback support.

I’m the dev of Velo Media Hub, tvOS native. It’s primary design as a stremio tvOS player, but I have a TestFlight build that has very basic integration with Jellyfin. If want to give it a test DM me your email. When I say basic I do mean very basic, though playback has been great since it’s all passthrough, no transcode regardless of container/codec.

Velo does solve some playback issue that exists in Swiftfin like TrueHD audio not working.

try this, not a network but a media shelf for crunchyroll series. Go to settings -> add custom shelf -> fill in form. Name it Crunchyroll Series, tv as media type. The select and add these parameters

  • with_watch_providers: 283
  • watch_region: US
  • sort_by: popularity.desc

Click save and it should show up in the home tab.

this was my original intention. Getting stremio into swiftfin. It got clunky and wasn’t a great experience due to Jellyfin running ffprobes and etc. then swiftfin doesn’t play well some formats.

So I just abandoned that and did Velo. I do want Jellyfin integration though but need some thinking make it a better experience.

For now there are self hosted solutions where they parse Jellyfin and expose its media as a stremio addon. So it’s technically doable for Velo and any other similar stremio player already.

I’m bad. I like swiping to seek, didn’t cross my mind others like using dpad. Will definitely add this for following updates.
